Introduction:

It was the greatest war in American history.
3 million fought - 600,000 died.
It was the only war fought on American soil by Americans, and for that reason we have always been fascinated with The Civil War.
Hundreds of books, movies and documentaries have (and are) being created about this war. With the advent of the internet, we now have yet another tool to study every single event in this great period of American history.

Task:

 

Congratulations on your new job as a reporter during the Civil War.  Your mission is to gather information on the direction the war is going after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and how African American changed the morale of the war. 

 

Some of the topics of concern of the people in the north and south are the following:

*   Reasons for the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation.

*   Military advances of both the south and north

*   advantages of north and south

*   effects of the Emancipation Proclamation

*   how are the soldiers ( state of mind)

*   the inclusion of the 54th Infantry

 

 

Questions to Answer

As a reporter these are the questions you should be able to address in your article.

 

1)    Briefly explain the major battles for both the north and the south, and who was more successful?

2) Why did Lincoln feel that it was necessary to issue the Emancipation Proclamation?

3)  How did the northerners and the southerners react to the proclamation?

4) How did the proclamation change the purpose of war?

5) Explain how the soldiers are doing and the conditions of the war training camps, songs they sang, games they played etc

6)  What were some of the ways the black soldiers where treated differently than the white soldiers?

7) Why did African Americans want to join the war?
