Introduction

The United States is the richest country in the world. It is also a country to which immigrants have traditionally been welcome. This may be changing. Illegal immigration is at an all time high and a great portion of the American public believes that immigrants take away jobs and services away from them. Laws are being adopted to restrict legal immigration and to curtail the services provided to illegal immigrants and their children. Are these changes fair? Should immigrants have the same rights and benefits that the rest of American citizens have?

The Task

Your group will make an oral presentation accompanied by a PowerPoint slide show analyzing the laws, rights and problems associated with the issue of immigration. You will also provide examples of suggested solutions to these problems and make a recommendation that your group feel will address these issues accordingly.

The Process

* You and your group will research the rights and services, if any, that immigrants in the United States are entitled to.

*You will research the laws governing work, housing and medical services concerning immigrants.

*You will analyze the problems this issue poses to our society and evaluate the proposals others have suggested to solve this problem.

*Finally you will make a recommendation that your group feels will solve this problem.

*You will then use the worksheets found in the AHPPA website to organize and record your research.

*Fill out the worksheets for the 4 steps of policy analysis.  You can access them by clicking on the blue links below.

The 4 steps include:

Define the Social Problem

Gather the Evidence

Determine Causes and Factors

Evaluating the Policies Used

You will use the information on these worksheets as resource material to complete your task.

*Create your PowerPoint presentation as described below.

Your Power Point presentation should include:

A)   A front page slide containing a heading of your topic, the names of your group members, and a picture related to the topic.

B)   Slides showing rights immigrants are entitled to in the United States.

C)   Slides showing the laws governing the rights of immigrants.

D)  Slides showing the problems immigration is causing, including statistics and graphics.

E)   Slides showing your recommendations for a solution to these problems, including initiatives proposed by others.

F)   A closing slide containing a bibliography citing the sources you used in your research.

Your work will be graded according to the requirements outlined in a rubric.
