PARTICIPATION ACTIVITY: Providing Survey Research to Players

1. Select a policy issue that you (or your group) would be interested in studying.

2. Identify a specific player that is interested in the selected issue. Contact the player directly by phone or mail. If you are not sure how to identify and locate the player, review Chapter, which provides the necessary information. If you have trouble contacting the actual player or one of the player's assistants, you can still undertake the project and submit it without prior contact. However, it is better to get help from the player at the outset. If you are unable to arrange a meeting, skip the next step and go directly to 4.

3. Explain to the player that you would like to design and conduct a survey on an issue of interest to both of you. Provide an overview of how the survey would be designed and conducted. Indicate that you will be contacting the player in a week to determine if the player is interested in having the survey conducted.

   If there is interest, meet with the player to reach an agreement on the following items:

   • type of information to be acquired
   • description of target population
   • sampling procedures
   • methods of contact
   • questions
   • date when report will be submitted

4. Using the guidelines provided in this chapter, develop a survey design. Have your teacher approve the design and then implement the survey. Collect the information carefully, and analyze your results.

5. Complete the report on the agreed-upon date, submit it in written form, and offer to make an oral presentation.

6. Thank the player for the opportunity to provide the service. Provide a report to the class on your experience.
