Your problem (phrase): HIV/AIDS
in Sub-Saharan Africa
1. State
one of the major existing policies that attempts to deal with the social
problem:
Security Council Resolution 1308 (2000) encourages
UNAIDS to work with member nations to develop policies on HIV/AIDS prevention
education, testing, and treatment, and encourages member states to work toward
greater cooperation in these areas; also requests the Secretary General to
provide training for peacekeeping personnel on issues related to HIV/AIDS
prevention.
2. What
are the advantages of this policy (consider effectiveness, costs, enforcement, public acceptance):
This resolution
increased the world’s awareness of the problem of HIV/AIDS and the need for
more efforts related to prevention education and treatment.
3. What
are the disadvantages of this policy?
Consider effectiveness, costs, enforcement, public acceptance):
The policy is
merely a resolution to “encourage” member states to enact measures to prevent
and treat HIV/AIDS. It fails to
appropriate financial resources toward the problem
4. Based
on your evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages, should the current
policy be totally replaced, strengthened, or improved? What advantages, if any, from the current
policy should be retained? What
disadvantages, if any, should be eliminated?
This resolution clearly needs to be strengthened
with specific programs and financial allocations to fund the necessary
prevention education and treatment programs.
