Date: September 23, 2001 Group Members: John Doe
Sectional conflicts between the North and the South over the expansion of slavery existed in the nineteenth century. A civil war could result if the equal number of pro-slavery and anti-slavery states were to change. In 1818 the Missouri Territory applied for admission as a state. The Missouri Territory permitted slavery and its admission into the Union would tilt the balance towards pro-slavery states.
1. Increased tension in Congress between the North and the South.
2. Conflict in Missouri between pro- and anti-slave forces.
3. Uncertainty concerning future territories that may become states.
