Introduction:

What would you do if you did not have a home?  What would you do?  Animal habitats are being destroyed every 10 seconds.   It did not just begin!  You have been selected to examine the affect people have had and are still having on animal habitats. You will read “The Year of the Panda” and discover how the interaction with human and environmental concerns and other animals effect how an animal survives.

Task:

You will examine through your reading and research the difference between and ecosystem and a biome, as well as the difference between the habitat and an ecosystem.  You will create a pamphlet that will illustrate the animal’s habitat. In the pamphlet you will give a geographic location of the habitat and examples of how man has affected the animal and where it lives.

Process:

You will work with a partner to read and investigate the panda’s habitat or biome.  In order to examine the problem, you will use the PPA Steps. As you read the book, The Year of the Panda, you will analyze the problem the panda is facing. You and your partner will answer questions to help guide your research.  Use the resources to help you identify the problem and the causes. Then examine the problem that existed and a solution to the problem.  How is the problem the animal faces today being solved?

Your pamphlet should consist of three sections.  Section one should include the animal and its habitat.  Section two should show the problems facing the animals’ habitat. Section three should show how the animal is being protected.

Resources:

·       Ecosystem Think Quest

·       Panda Protection Think Quest

·       The Year of the Panda

Guided Reading Questions:

·       What type of animal is the book about?

·       What do they eat?

·       Where do they live?

·       Are they endangered? If so why are they endangered?

·       What ecosystem exists in this habitat?

·       How did the animals survive?

·       What policy did the government put in place to protect the animals?

Six Steps of the PPA (Public Policy Analyst)

Step 1 Define the Problem

Step 2 Gather the Evidence

Step 3 Identify the Causes

Step 4 Evaluate an Existing Policy

Step 5 Develop Solutions

Step 6 Select the Best Solution (Feasibility vs. Effectiveness)
