INTRODUCTION

Times are tough in the United States. It is the late 1930’s and you and your family are living in a two-bedroom apartment with three other families. The members of  your family have decided to take turns eating on different days in order to conserve food. On the days that you are really hungry, you have been known to eat out of garbage cans.

Although you are only a teenager, you have spent several years in search of work. As you go out in search of work and food you often ask yourself questions, such as:

How did this happen to us?

Why has this “Great Depression”

lasted as long as it has?

Will it ever end?

This was the life of many children during the Great Depression. Your job is to find the answers to these questions to provide this child with some peace of mind.

TASK

Your task is to write a three page paper discussing the Great Depression. The paper should include the causes of the depression, as well as the aspects of the New Deal that helped to economically revive the country. You will also use poster board to create a collage using images that depict life during this time. Your poster should have a title that expresses the theme of your images.

You will research the Great Depression using the internet, your textbook, notes, and any other resources that you can find. You will use this research to complete the steps of the American History Public Policy Analyst (AHPPA) . 1.    Identify the problem

2.    Gather your evidence for the problem

3.    Determining the cause of the problem

After completing the AHPPA you will submit the completed forms to me for approval before beginning work on your paper.

The collage shows some attention to construction. Most items are neatly trimmed. All items are securely attached to the backing. A few barely noticeable stray marks, smudges or glue stains are present. Nothing is hanging over the edges.

The collage was put together sloppily. Items appear to be just "slapped on". Pieces may be loose or hanging over the edges. Smudges, stains, rips, uneven edges, and/or stray marks are evident.

Creativity

Several of the graphics or objects used in the collage reflect an exceptional degree of student creativity in their creation and/or display

One or two of the graphics or objects used in the collage reflect student creativity in their creation and/or display.

One or two graphics or objects were made or customized by the student, but the ideas were typical rather than creative (.e.g, apply the emboss filter to a drawing in Photoshop).

The student did not make or customize any of the items on the collage.

Attention to Theme

The student gives a reasonable explanation of how every item in the collage is related to the assigned theme. For most items, the relationship is clear without explanation.

The student gives a fairly reasonable explanation of how most items in the collage are related to the assigned theme.

The student's explanations are weak and illustrate difficulty understanding how to relate items to the assigned theme.

Design

Graphics are trimmed to an appropriate size and interesting shape and are arranged well, some in front and some behind. Care has been taken to balance the pictures across the canvas.

Graphics are trimmed to an appropriate size and interesting shape and are arranged with some items in front and others behind. The canvas, however does not appear balanced.

Graphics have been trimmed to an appropriate size and shape, but the arrangement of items is not very attractive. It appears there was not a lot of planning of the item placement.

Graphics are untrimmed OR of inappropriate size and/or shape. It appears little attention was given to designing the collage.

CONCLUSION

Once you have completed this project, you will understand the social and economic policies that contributed to the worst financial period in the history of our nation. Remember, one of the most important things about history is that we learn from our mistakes, so that we don’t repeat them.
