Why Are Teenagers Always Tired?

Introduction:

Do you have trouble getting out of bed in morning? Do you fall asleep during class?  Do you find yourself irritable, annoyed or frustrated?  Maybe it’s time to take a look at your sleep patterns and what you’re doing to help or burden them.  If I told you better sleep and efficient hours of sleep can lead to better grades and overall well-being, would you do something about it?

Task:

Since we already have a later schedule for school and it’s probably hard to have it adjusted for a later time, you need to figure out how to schedule your time around quality sleep and how to increase the quality of your sleep.  Your task is to create a Poster with a checklist of ways to increase quality of sleep, using proper resources and then create a personal schedule in which you can follow every day. You will also write a summary of why sleep is important and why you chose the items on your checklist on the back of the poster. In order to complete this assignment efficiently you must follow the six-step Public Policy Approach (PPA).

Process:

-          You will use the internet in order to find articles, studies and facts prevalent to the problem.

-          Use the resources below in order to respond effectively; you are not limited to these of course and can find new resources to work with.

-          Use PPA steps before writing up your checklist and schedule.

Public Policy Approach (PPA):

Use the Public Policy Analyst to assist you in researching for your poster and written summary.

1.      Define the problem

2.      Gather evidence

3.      Identify causes

4.      Evaluate a policy

5.      Develop solutions

6.      Select the best solution(s)

-          Come up with a first draft and then refine it into your final product.

Procedure:

1.      Use the resources to find what you want to put in your checklist for Dos and Don’ts in order to gain quality sleep.

2.      Create your checklist and dress it up on a poster.  You should have at least 10 items.

3.      You’re the backside of your poster to write about why sleep is important and why you chose these items for your checklist, while using standard written English.  This should come out to 1-2 type written pages in 12 font Calibri, single spaced.   This summary must follow the six-step PPA format!!

4.      Your schedule will be created for a week time period, 24 hour days.  You must have at 24 hours listed with what you are doing and must include 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep per day.

5.      Finally you will present you poster to the class and discuss your findings and what you will do in order to improve your sleep.

Evaluation:

Your final grade will be dependent on an evaluation by your peers and me.  You will be judged on your effort and creativeness put into your poster, quality of the items on your checklist, summary quality, the specific organization of time used in your schedule and the realistic use of your schedule and checklist into and urban teenager’s life.
