INTRODUCTION:

In this web quest we will be investigating the different types of discrimination the author introduces and develops in this novel. After the reconstruction period in the South (1877), the Jim Crow Laws created a dual society in which the Southern Black was treated with indignity and inhumanity. You will become public policy analysts. You will evaluate the types of discrimination in the South during the Jim Crow period and you will find public policy solutions to eliminate future indignities.

TASK:

Using the steps of Public Policy Analysis you will analyze the problem and present your findings to a Congressional Sub Committee who is empowered to make new laws, which will create new public policies. This is not a responsibility that should be taken lightly because what you present will affect generations to come.

PROCESS/RESOURCE:

Your group will also be responsible for designing and presenting a power point presentation which identifies the problem, finds evidence for the problem, determines the causes and the effects, and proposes possible solutions. You will adhere to the PPA format.

·         Define the problem

·         Gathering Evidence

·         Identify the Causes

·         Evaluate the Policy

·         Develop Solutions

·         Select Best Solution

Your PowerPoint will include a minimum of six slides; each slide will discuss the information from the six worksheets. Each team member will be responsible for one slide, but the entire group will go through the analysis steps together.

The following websites will help you make an informed analysis:

CONCLUSION:

Through your research, you saw the social problem of racism in the South and observed the public policy that existed at this time to address the social problem.  Based on your research and efforts to create an effective public policy, you testified before Congress and hopefully influenced the lawmakers in their creation of new laws to codify a solution.
