Introduction:

The House on Mango Street is filled with race and gender discrimination. In the novel strangers come into Esperanza’s neighborhood and discriminate against Esperanza and her neighbors. Also, because Esperanza is a girl, she is not treated equally as the boys and must follow the traditional gender roles for females.

Task:

You and your group are to select and research one of the various themes in the novel such as, racism, poverty, sexism or gender discrimination. You are required to use the Internet and various outside sources in your paper.  Discuss and evaluate how these themes are evident in today’s New York City.

·         Do you believe that these problems are a major issue in today’s times?

·         State various solutions that you feel can help the theme that you have chosen.

·         As you do your research, look for various scenarios that have been in the news that you can correlate with your theme.

·         You are to formulate your research into a 3-4 page paper.

In The House on Mango StreetSandra Cisneros addressed the social problems of racism, poverty, sexism and gender roles. You will work together in small groups assigned by the teacher.  First, each group will determine which problem in the story will be their focus.  Before completing your paper, use the following 6-step TIPS public policy analysis work sheets using evidence from The House on Mango Street.
