Obesity

St. Spyridon 2013

Introduction:

Obesity is perhaps one of the biggest problems society faces today. Public health advocates have argued that the condition not only carries serious health risks, but that America's swelling waist lines will drive up the cost of medical care and even affect our ability to compete in the global marketplace. Given these implications, it's important that we address the root cause of obesity. But we haven't. According to analysis of government data, “If obesity rates continue on their current trajectories, by 2030, 13 states could have adult obesity rates above 60 percent, 39 states could have rates above 50 percent, and all 50 states could have rates above 44 percent.”

Some of you might remember me when I was really over weight or even saw me stop on the second floor for air as I was going upstairs to the fourth floor gym, but not anymore.   Since I was made aware of the dangers of obesity and high blood pressure I’ve change the way I eat and think about food, now I’m cycling around Manhattan. “HA! I beat obesity”.

This social problem is huge in our country.

Task:

You are being asked to create a PowerPoint presentation on obesity using ten slides or more, and applying the PPA to the presentation.  Every student will be responsible for their own slide/PPA step during the presentation.

Good luck!!!!

Process/Resources:

·        First- Create groups of five and select who in is charge of presenting which PPA step on the presentation, and then start to discuss the problem. (define the problem) (Obesity).

Who’s in charge of what step/slide:

Step of the PPA

Name of student

Define the problem

Gather evidence

Identify the Causes

Evaluate an existing policy

Develop solutions

Select the best solution

·        Second –Do your research and gather evidence on the web about the problem (Obesity).  You may use more than one slide to present each other’s evidence. Be careful where you get your evidence, some website do not have facts.

·        Third – (Identify the Causes) write down a list on what causes the problem.   You may use more than one slide.

·        Forth – Go over policy or solutions that are currently out for the problem.  You may use more than one slide.

·        Fifth – Come up with your own ideas on solutions for this problem. You may use more than one slide.

·        Sixth – Make an argument Discuss why each of your solutions is the best one.

·        Seventh – Between your groups, Practice presenting your slides with each other and remember no one pays attention to a boring presentation, make sure you are clear in your speech and you are making eye contact with your audience, animations and illustrations are great to use in a Power Point presentation.

Here are some suggested resources you may use for this project. Sources outside of these websites are acceptable if approved in advance by me.
