Introduction:
Congratulations! You are a winner!
Around 510 BC, the Ancient Athenians invented democracy.
Democracy is a government in which people vote to make their own rules and
laws. Democracy in Athens was established as a result of continuous
reorganization. Democracy in Athens meant that all citizens over the age of 20
had the opportunity to take part in governing the country. Each year 500 lucky citizen names were drawn from all
the citizens of Athens. Those 500 citizens had to serve for one year as the
lawmakers of ancient Athens. With this new found liberty to choose, came many
limitations for the citizens of ancient Athens.
Task:
You and your group members will be required to compose an
expository essay seeking to answer the question: What problems did democracy
create in Ancient Athens?
Process/
Resources:
1. You will
be assigned to groups of 3-4 students.
2. You will
research the many problems that were created when ancient Athens adopted a
democratic government. You will then select one problem to address in which you
will develop some solutions that addresses that particular problem.
3. You will
be using the 6 steps of the PPA process as discussed in class to help you
formulate your essay.( see worksheets)
Six Steps for the PPA Process:
A. Define the Problem - The problem is found in the introduction
B. Gather Evidence - Gathering evidence consist of conducting research,
Use the work sheet and the search engines provided
C. Identifying Causes – Conduct a series of observations or hypothesis that
will allow you to identify the causes of the problem
D. Evaluate Existing
Policy – Discuss
within your group some of the ways that the ancient Athenians dealt with this
particular problem and evaluate the effectiveness of this policy
E. Develop Solutions –Using the
list you developed in the “Gathering Evidence” step, research how other
democratic countries or government of ancient or current times addressed this
problem. With your group, look back at the changes
you would make in addressing this issue. Choose at least two. Discuss whether
your changes are reasonable and would they make a difference in how all
citizens were given the opportunity to choose .What specific actions could your
group to improve this problem? Record
your actions on your worksheet
F. SELECT BEST SOLUTION – (developing your policy) Discuss within your group the
likelihood of these solutions eliminating the problem. Of your solutions,
select one that your group has determine to be the best in addressing the
problem
4. After
gathering and recording information with your group, compose your essay which
will describe the problem that was created as a result of having a democratic
government in ancient Athens. Your essay will also present a solution addressing the
problem. The first paragraph should
contain background information about ancient Athens, and a connection to the
problems that occurred when the government became a democracy. The second and third paragraphs should
describe the problems that you identified earlier (use the Inquiry Methods).
The next two paragraphs (four and five) should present the solution that the
group members have developed along with your conclusion. Here are some search engines that will aid
you in your research:
