Introduction:
You come home
from school and log onto Facebook. All
of a sudden you see that someone is posting mean and harmful comments about
you. All of a sudden your phone starts
to buzz and you see that you are receiving text messages from numerous people
who saw the post and are now spreading terrible rumors about you. What is this called? This is called cyber bullying and has become
a nationwide problem in the past few years.
A bully is a quarrelsome child who
teases, threatens or torments another person. Bullying in school has
become an out of control problem in our school and in many schools across the
United States. Situations that began with one student bullying another have
often ended in suicide, murder and of course kids going to jail.
Students have fully embraced the Internet’s
social networking sites such as Facebook and other mobile communication
technologies, such as cell phones for communication with friends, making new
friends, seeking information, and creating their own web sites and blogs. While most Internet use is fun and
beneficial, there are increasing problems of students using the Internet or
other mobile devices to send or post harmful or cruel texts or images to bully
and harass others. WE NEED TO DEVISE
EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED HERE AT I.S. 143 THAT MAY PUT AN
END TO CYBER BULLYING ONCE AND FOR ALL!
Task:
Students
will work in groups of 4 to write a one page paper on what cyber bullying is,
what the causes and effects of cyber bullying is, what policies are in place
about dealing with cyber bullying today and then what is the solution(s) your
group thinks would be best to implement here at I.S. 143. Each group will also be asked to produce a
PSA (Public Service Announcement) poster or video where they will introduce
what cyber bullying is, what the effects of cyber bullying are and present
their best policy for a solution(s) that they feel could be most effective to
implement here at I.S. 143 in a creative, attention-grabbing way. The solutions will be presented at a
“Think-tank” meeting with teachers and administrators for possible
implementation next year.

Process/Resources:
Next you will complete the following six
steps: (Each step is linked to a worksheet that you will complete one by
one.)
Students will be divided into a group of
four students. Each group will be
expected to use the PPA Steps to complete the following worksheets before
writing your paper and producing your poster.
The PPA Steps: These
are here to help you with the worksheets below.
Please look at the hyperlink to give you some ideas about what you will
be doing.

GATHER
EVIDENCE OF THE PROBLEM

3.
Identify causes
Worksheet 3
4.
Evaluate a policy
Worksheet 4
5.
Develop solutions
Worksheet 5
6.
Select the best solution
Worksheet 6
Next, you will use the
worksheets above to gather information for your essay. As a group, you will need to write an
expository essay explaining your findings.
You must include the following information in your essay:
Essay:
Introduction:
Group definition of
cyber bullying (cite evidence if
necessary)
Examples of cyber
bullying at I.S. 143 (without the use of any people’s names)
Body Paragraph 1:
What are some of the
causes of cyber bullying that you investigated? (Cite evidence) What are some effects of cyber bullying for
both the victim and the bully? (Cite
evidence)
Body Paragraph 2:
What are some of the
existing policies on cyber bullying that exist today? (Cite evidence)
Body Paragraph 3:
What were some policies
for solutions on cyber bullying that your group devised for the I.S. 143
community? What made you choose these
particular policies?
Conclusion Paragraph:
What did your group
agree on was the best policy or policies for a solution that could be
implemented here at I.S. 143 and that your group believes would be
effective? Also I want you to explain
why you chose this policy. What makes
this policy the most effective?
(Remember effectiveness means it needs to be possible to be
implemented. If it is not possible to
put in effect then it is not the best policy.)
Reminder:
I need to see evidence
of the writing process so it is mandatory that you write at least 3 drafts for
this assignment and hand in all three drafts with corrections and revisions on
the first 2 drafts.
Poster:
Here is a sample of a
PSA commercial. You will be making a
poster simulating a PSA OR you can make a video on
cyber bullying where you give statistics or examples of cyber bullying, causes
and effects of cyber bullying and the best policy or policies for a solution to
cyber bullying at I.S. 143.
Bullying
PSA
- Example - SchoolTube
www.schooltube.com/video/.../Bullying-PSA-Example
After writing your
drafts, your group will also produce a PSA (Public Service Announcement) Poster
that will be hung up in the school. What
your poster looks like is up to you but you do need to have at least the
following information on the poster:
The topic (cyber bullying)
Examples of cyber bullying and possibly causes
and effects of cyber bullying.
Best policy or policies for a solution that your
group devised.
What victims of cyber bullying should do about
the problem.
Pictures/ Statistics/ Quotes/ Drawings, etc.
Reminder:
Posters should be simple, attractive, easy to read, neat and teach a
lesson about cyber bullying with your best solution. If you choose to make a video instead, you
need to include the same information as the poster in a creative and
interesting way where people would want to watch the video and learn about
cyber bullying. I will use the poster
rubric (see above) for grading the video if you choose to make a video instead.

Conclusion:
Congratulations! By completing this Webquest, you
have now learned what cyber bullying is and how it affects all the people involved.
As a Public Policy Analyst using the PPA
model, you have identified the causes of the problem, provided evidence,
researched the current policies, and created a cyber bullying action plan for
I.S 143 Eleanor Roosevelt. As a result
of this assignment, you have been an active part in contributing solutions to
the social problem of cyber bullying at I.S. 143 Eleanor Roosevelt.
