Introduction

MSW—more commonly known as trash or garbage—consists of everyday items such as product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, appliances, paint, and batteries. In 2006, US residents, businesses, and institutions produced more than 251 million tons of MSW, which is approximately 4.6 pounds of waste per person per day!

School without walls foundation academy does not have a recylcing pgrogram! So... what can we do??!!

Produce Less Waste by practicing the 3 R’s:

    * Reduce the amount and toxicity of trash you discard.

    * Reuse containers and products; repair what is broken or give it to someone who can repair it.

    * Recycle as much as possible, which includes buying products with recycled content.

Task

Our Class has just been delegated as the SWWFA school recycling committee. In groups of 3 you will research school recycling programs in the United States.

 You will:

-  Use the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) method to investigate the social problem by gathering evidence of the problem, identifying the causes of the problem, and evaluating current New York State policies on recycling.

-  Create a recycling program for SWWFA that includes who, what, why and how.

-  Design a logo for SWWFA recycling program to be put on recycling pins for each classroom.

Process

  1.   Use the Six Steps of the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) to:

a)     Define the Problem using Worksheet 1

b)     Gather the Evidence using Worksheet 2

c)     Determine the Causes using Worksheet 3

d)     Examine an Existing Policy using Worksheet 4

e)     Develop Solutions using Worksheet 5

f)      Select the Best Solution using Worksheet 6

      2. Research school recycling programs in the United States and New York state specifically. Create a recycling program for SWWFA.

      Include:

Who – Who will be participating in the program? Who will be implementing the program? Who will benefit from the program? Who will we need to contact to make this program happen?

What – What is the program? What materials are needed? What are we recycling (paper, plastic, aluminum, glass)?

Why – Why is the program necessary in our school?

How – How will we implement the program?

3. Design a logo for SWWFA recycling program. Research other logos for recycling and various products for ideas.

The logo must:

-be relevant to recycling and SWWFA

-be colorful and eye-catching

-create interest in recycling and bring attention to the program

-be neat and organized high quality work.

What is a Logo?

A logotype, commonly known as a logo, is the graphic element of a trademark or brand, which is set in a special typeface/font, or arranged in a particular, but legible, way. The shape, color, typeface, etc. should be distinctly different from others in a similar market. * The logo of a business should be a symbol or have a special meaning that defines a business. For example if your business is in the computer industry such as a web designer, graphic artist, web developer, or data entry clerk your logo might be a computer, keyboard or mouse. When picking a logo for your business make sure the logo has a theme that matches your business and it is different from other business logos. You are looking for a unique logo that will identify your business.
