“Young male shot to death after an confrontation at a house party”

“Stabbing of young female leaves community outraged.”

INTRODUCTION:

These are the types of headlines we read across our nation on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, teen violence is on rise across the nation. In 2003, 5,570 young people ages 10 to 24 were murdered—an average of 15 each day. Of these victims, 82% were killed with firearms (CDC 2006).

TASK:

Your class has been selected by the agency Action for a Better Community, ABC, to create a brochure advocating for a new policy.

In groups of three, you will research the underlying causes of teen violence through out the nation. You will…

¯       Use the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) method to investigate the social problem by gathering evidence of the problem, identifying the causes of the problem, and evaluating current NYC policies relating to that problem.

¯       Create a policy that provides a solution to this societal problem.

¯       Design and complete a brochure of one underlying cause and a possible solution regarding teen violence. Your brochure should include:

o        Title regarding teen violence

o        Proof of your research (statistics/graphs)

A solution

Graphics

List of agencies for help

¯       Once you have completed the above requirements, your group will present the information to the class in a 5 minute presentation. The presentation will be based upon the TIPS worksheets completed during your research.
