“Young male shot to death after an
confrontation at a house party”
“Stabbing of young female leaves community outraged.”
INTRODUCTION:
These are the types of headlines we read across
our nation on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, teen violence is on rise across
the nation. In 2003,
5,570 young people ages 10 to 24 were murdered—an average of 15 each day. Of
these victims, 82% were killed with firearms (CDC 2006).
TASK:
Your
class has been selected by the agency Action for a Better Community, ABC, to
create a brochure advocating for a new policy.
In groups of three, you will research
the underlying causes of teen violence through out the nation. You will…
¯
Use the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) method to
investigate the social problem by gathering evidence of the problem,
identifying the causes of the problem, and evaluating current NYC policies
relating to that problem.
¯
Create a policy that provides a solution to this
societal problem.
¯
Design and complete a brochure of one underlying
cause and a possible solution regarding teen violence. Your brochure should
include:
o
Title regarding teen violence
o
Proof of your research (statistics/graphs)
A solution
Graphics
List of agencies for help
¯
Once you have completed the above requirements, your group will
present the information to the class in a 5 minute presentation. The
presentation will be based upon the TIPS worksheets completed during your
research.
PROCESS:
Step 1: In your groups of 3 three; brainstorm causes of teen violence.
Step 2: A speaker from ABC is coming to your class. Interview him about
teen violence in our community as well as across the nation. Remember to
take notes. Each group will have one question to ask. When every
group has asked a question, you may ask follow-up questions.
Step 3: Use the Public Policy Analyst to assist you in researching for
your presentation.
What
policies can you create to correct the problem?
What is the best
policy to correct the problem?
Step 4: Create a brochure that includes the following….
Title
regarding teen violence
Proof of your research
(statistics/graphs)
A solution
Graphics
List of agencies for help
Step 5: You will be expected to give a 5-minute presentation to the class.
You should have a couple extra brochures to pass around to the class. Your
brochure should be thoroughly explained, please include information on the
research you conducted on teen violence.

CONCLUSION:
Congratulations,
you have successfully finished your first web quest. You have researched and analyzed the social
problem of TEEN violence using the TIPS Public Policy Analyst guidelines. You have also learned how to create a
brochure using websites for evidence and information to complete your
task. GOOD JOB!
