Introduction
Over the summer, you read
the novel “City of Ember” by Jeanne DuPrau. The story
is about Ember, an underground city that is slowly running out of power and
supplies due to its aging infrastructure.
While the story is a piece of fiction, the idea of sustainability is one
that is very real for your generation.
You live in NYC, a place where 8.3 million people live in only 305
square miles. New York City is the most
densely populated city in the U.S. Like
Ember, NYC, has an aging infrastructure that is very costly to keep up.
Ms.
Jean has selected our class to examine the problem that the aging
infrastructure will have on your generation.
She is looking for this class to analyze the problem and come up with
some several public policy solutions.
Task
Based
on your research, you will create a PowerPoint presentation that describes the
problems that NYC has or will have with infrastructure and some proposed
solutions. Your PowerPoint should be at
least 10 slides long.
Process
You
will work as a group of 4 on analyzing the problems that might arise because of
NYC aging infrastructure. You will use Public Policy Analyst method to examine
this issue.
· Describe what infrastructure
is and how it is important to city life.
· Identify at least three
types of infrastructure located within NYC
· Describe how these
infrastructures are important to life within NYC.
· Explain the problem that
each of these infrastructures are currently facing
· Pick two of NYC proposed
solutions and evaluate how feasible they are.
o
What is one aspect of the solution that you might change?

Conclusion
Thank you for your participation in this project. By participating in this Web quest you have
learned about the six steps of public policy.
You have become Public Policy Analysts. You have identified an existing problem
of aging infrastructure and the effects it has on our city. You examined solutions to the problem and
identified the importance of these solutions.
Thank you again and congratulations on helping the future of our city.
