Ms.
Connerly
I.S. 195 Roberto Clemente
How do
you feel about having a heat rash, fungal infection, or even an increased
amount of acne?
Well these are just a few conditions you are at risk for if
you are obese. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States of America and
is becoming an increasing problem amongst children. Individuals that are obese
have an increased risk of contracting diseases such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, and heart disease. Have you
ever teased or made fun of someone who was overweight or obese? Obesity
also affects people emotionally as it leads to low self esteem and depression.
Your challenge should you choose to take it is to do 2
things:
1. In
groups of 4 you are to go through and complete the six steps of the PPA and create
a public policy poster that can be displayed inside the school cafeteria and
around the building.
2. You are
to write a persuasive essay convincing the school lunchroom staff and chefs to
provide healthier food choices in the cafeteria.
1. You will
be assigned to groups of 4. Within each group you need to decide who is going
to complete what part of the assignment and what parts are you going to all
contribute to.
2. Use your
textbook and what we have learned about digestion and nutrition along with the
websites in the resource section to learn more about obesity and how it affects
The United States.
3. Each
small group will carefully complete the steps of The Public Policy Analyst and
complete each worksheet before beginning the poster.
· Step 1:
Define the problem Worksheet1:
"Defining the social problem"(MSWORD)
· Step 2:
Gather the Evidence Worksheet2:
"Gathering evidence of the problem"(MSWORD)
· Step 3:
Identify the Causes Worksheet3:
"Identifying the cause of the problem"(MSWORD)
· Step 4:
Evaluate a Policy Worksheet4:
"Evaluating Existing Public Policies"(MSWORD)
· Step 5:
Develop Solutions Worksheet5:
"Developing public policy solutions"(MSWORD)
·
Step 6: Select the Best Solution Worksheet6:
"Selecting the best public policy solution" (MSWORD)
·
Your poster should include
the work from these worksheets by labeling the 6 steps as follows: The Problem,
Evidence, Causes, Existing Policies, Solutions, and The Best Solution. Include
a summary of the work you have done for each step that can be presented to the
staff and the rest of the students in the building. Also include a short
explanation as to why you believe the solution you chose in step 6 is the best
solution to the problem.
·
Posters should be
legible and able to be read from afar. All posters should also include pictures.
4. Each of you will write a persuasive essay that will
be at least 5 paragraphs long.
·
Make sure your essay
has a clear introduction, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion. It is best to
state your point of view in the introduction of your essay. You have used the
PPA steps to analyze the problem of childhood obesity in The United States and
these can be used to write a strong persuasive essay.
· When
writing your essay, remember who your audience is and that your goal is to
convince them of your point of view. Be sure to include what you have learned
about obesity throughout your essay.
· Remember
your essay will take the position that being able to make a healthier food
choice in the cafeteria is a solution to childhood obesity in the United
States.
