Teacher Narratives About Homework
Ms. Donohue TC Writing and Special Educator
I have been a teacher for four years and have seen students who are diligent about doing their homework and those who are not. I have found that students, who tend to complete their homework daily, are usually more organized, receive higher grade point averages, and are more independent learners. I have found that students who do not complete their homework assignments daily tend to lack organizational skills, often are below grade level in math and reading, and struggle to complete work independently. I feel homework, when prescribed with thoughtfulness from the teacher, helps students boost their reading and math skills while simultaneously helping students practice becoming more organized and independent.
I have
noticed that my own students at PS/MS 123 have not been completing most
homework assignments which concerns me because they are not only missing out on
10 points toward their overall grade point average, quarterly, but also not
getting in consistent reading which is hindering their ability to reach higher
reading levels. This is especially concerning because most of my students are
already reading below grade level and thus this lack of practice will only set
them back further.

My noticing about students who complete homework is that they arrive better prepared for the next instructional day based on prior interaction with the prior days instructional targets. Those that do not generally falter in their ability to maintain the rigor required of the CCLS.
Homework is imperative for any student to maintain or keep pace with the current level of rigor embedded within the CCLS.
I can't speak for the school overall but the classes I've been blessed to offer direct instruction to is that most are diligent about completing homework.
