Introduction:

As seen in the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, racism existed in the 1930s and still exists today. Author Mildred Taylor describes three distinct periods in United States history in which racism was heavily rooted --the period leading up to the Civil War, the 1930s, and today. There are many implications and consequences resulting from this serious social problem.

Task:

You will be divided into small groups and each group will research racism in America (past and present) in terms of one of the following areas: education, employment, or housing.

Each group will create a Power Point Presentation (using the smartboard) of at least ten slides in which they will use the four-step APPA model when preparing their presentations. A reference page will also be required.  Click on the hyperlinks in each step in order to complete the worksheets that will coincide with your slides. You must have a minimum of 5 resources.

Process/Resources:

    1.   Define the Problem: Racism has existed in America since the before the Civil War and still exists in many places today.

Worksheet 1

    2.   Gather evidence: Using the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and other resources, discuss racism, as it existed in the past, and how it still exists today. Remember

to concentrate on the area to which your group was assigned- education, employment, or housing. Remember to cite details from the text to support any claims that

         you make.

         Worksheet 2

3.   Identify the causes: Discuss the origin of racism. Why was something so unjust allowed to perpetuate throughout the years? Again using the worksheets, give specific examples.

Worksheet 3

4.   Evaluate the existing policies: What policies are used to discourage racism today? What were the policies in the past? Have the policies changed from past to present?

Worksheet 4

Conclusion:

Racism is a serious social problem, which has its origins in the 1600s and continues to afflict Americans today- in terms of education, employment, and housing. Through your research, you have learned the definition of racism and how and where it originated. You have read about the causes of racism and how people are discriminated against in terms of education, housing, and employment. You have also learned about different policies that have been established and continue to be used in order for all people, regardless of their race or background to be treated equally and given the same opportunities as their white counterparts.
