History & Introduction

To Philippus Aurelus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim—Paracelsus (1493–1541), who probably made the single most important contribution to air pollution science by proclaiming:

“All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison. The right dose differentiates a poison from a remedy.”

(Quote from Gallo, M. A. (2008) in Casarett and Doull’s Toxicology, The Basic Science of Poisons, 7th Edition, Klaassen, C. D., Ed., McGraw–Hill Medical, New York.)

Air Pollution is the contamination of the air by impurities.

These impurities, called pollutants, can occur naturally or they can be produced by human activities. Naturally occurring pollutants include dust, pollen, salt particles, smoke from forest fires, and gases from decaying organisms. Most pollution caused by human activities is directly or indirectly the result of burning of fuels in furnaces or engines. This project is primarily concerned with air pollution caused by human activities.

Task

1)           You will be working in groups of 3 and will be using the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) format and will create an 8-10 slide power point that outlines the causes, effects, and fixes for Air pollution.

2)           Create a poster to educate your peers on Air Pollution and simple changes to their daily activities help stop polluting air.

Process

1) Your power point MUST include at least one slide for each step of the PPA.  To complete the linked worksheets listed use the resources given in item 5.

Ø Define the Problem - Worksheet 1

Ø Gather the EvidenceWorksheet 2

Ø Identify the CausesWorksheet 3

Ø Evaluate an Existing PolicyWorksheet 4

Ø Develop SolutionsWorksheet 5

Ø Select the Best Solution (Feasibility vs. Effectiveness)Worksheet 6

2)  The power point should also include a title slide, at least two diagrams, one data chart, and references.

3)   Using the one of the Best Solutions from step 6 of the PPA create a poster to educate your peers on global warming and simple changes to their daily activities help stop global warming.

I.            The poster MUST be on standard size oak tag 22in x 28in.

II.            Nice, large, colored title to get people's attention about your poster.

III.            You may use printed graphics or free-hand illustrations.

IV.            All group members first and last name, and class code must be written on the back of the board in permanent marker.
