Introduction:

According to the New York Times article President Obama is planning on issuing executive orders, directing all public school districts in the country to allow transgender students access to the bathroom of their gender identity or risk facing lawsuits and possibly losing federal funding. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has signed a bill into law that allows “men” and ‘women” bathrooms to be labeled unisex.

 

“Would you allow your son or daughter to use the restroom with people of the opposite sex”?

 

The first gender segregated toilets on record extended back to Paris in the 1700’s but regulations for American men and women were passed in 1887, Massachusetts required separate privies for businesses.  Most New Yorkers take their unfettered access to bathrooms for granted, yet every single day; transgender and gender nonconforming individuals must grapple with the fact that their choices may lead to harassment or worse.

 

You are a student at Fusion Middle School in the Bronx. You just learned that as of September 1, 2016 all bathrooms in your school would be labels “unisex” to accommodate the transgender population within your school.  You are unsure as to the expectations of the coming school year. You want your voice to be heard. Your principal is concerned and wants to hear the views and opinion of the students’ he has decided to allow students the opportunity to have their voices heard.

Example #2: I agree that boys and girls bathrooms in school should become gender neutral.

 

Unisex bathrooms in schools can minimize bullying; raise confidence level and reducing drop rate.

(a)      Diminishes inferiority/raise confidence level i.e. girls feels equal to boys n vise versa

(b)      Getting in and out the bathroom can be less time consuming

(c)      Gender-neutral bathrooms promote solidarity.
