Problem:  New York City has a high rate of pollution causing harm to the Earth.

While Improving, City's Air Quality Crisis Quietly Persists

INTRODUCTION

We take our air for granted, until something goes wrong. It's all around us. We can’t see it, but we can see what it does. When your bedroom is messy, you can see it, but when the air gets messy —polluted—we can’t always see the mess. Air pollution may be particulate matter: tiny particles in the air that irritate our lungs and leave a fine dust on the things they land on. Air pollution may also be in the form of gas. Gasses can’t be seen, but some in our air are harmful. When the air is clean, we can breathe more easily and be more active, running and playing outdoors. (People with asthma sometimes have a great deal of trouble breathing when the air is polluted.) Plants grow better when the air is clean. Water and wildlife are healthier, too.

TASK

Mrs. Pena has asked each class to come up with posters to explain the harm of pollutants. Posters will be shared with parents and the community during parent teacher night. Please make a poster that follows the poster rubric:

PROCESS/RESOURCES

Using the PPA Process, you will follow the six steps to solve the problem of pollution. The six steps of the PPA Process are: define the problem, gather the evidence, identify the cause, evaluate the existing policy, develop a solution, select the best solution.

Step 1: What is pollution? What are the three main types of pollution? What are some of the causes of air, land and water pollution?

Read: https://www.getepic.com/collection/791146/pollution

After you research and discuss with your partner, you will write 4 to 5 sentences describing the problem.

Step 2: Gather the Evidence

Read: https://kids.kiddle.co/Pollution

What are some effects of pollution?

After you research and discuss with your partner, you will write 3 negative effects of pollution.

Step 3: Identify the Cause

Watching the above videos read and write about what is causing pollution in New York City.

Step 4: Evaluate the Existing Policy

EVALUATION

CONCLUSION

Students learned about the problem of air and water pollution and its effects on the earth.

STANDARDS

ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems

Things that people do to live comfortably can affect the world around them. But they can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living things.

K-ESS3-3. Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air and/or other living things in the local environment.

Research to Build and Present Knowledge

2W6: Develop questions and participate in shared research and explorations to answer questions and to build knowledge.

2W7: Recall and represent relevant information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
