WEBQUEST: Too
Much Water Pollution!
STEM Grade 2
J. Lanzetta
Introduction
Did you know that only 1% of Earth's water is fit for consumption? (drinking) Between 5-10 million people die each year
from illness as a result of water pollution. Three trillion gallons of
wastewater is dumped in oceans every year. 250 million people around the world
do not have fresh water to drink.
Task
You and your team will go on a Web Quest to explore water pollution,
its causes, the evidence, and solutions!
A Web Quest is a fun Internet based way to research and gather
information on a topic. Along the way,
you will use graphic organizers to help you organize the information you find
at each step. At the end of Step 6, you
are ready to start designing your team’s project.
Time frame: 10 class
periods
Project: giant team
poster
Group roles: typist,
recorder, speaker, manager
Process
You will use the
following Internet links to videos, books, and articles to help you find
information about water pollution.
Any underlined words
are links. Click each link. Watch the video, listen to, or read, books,
and read the articles. Answer the
question in each section.
Use the graphic
organizers to organize the information you find. You can go back to any of the links at any
time to add more details to your organizers.
(For example, if you are in Step 3, you can go back to Steps 1 and 2)
Your team will
follow the steps of the PPA.
Step 1

Step 5
Answer: What do you think is the answer, or solution,
to the water pollution issue? What
should we do? (You may go back to any of
the links in the Web Quest)
Task: Brainstorm a list of ideas, or answers, with
your team. Record them on your
sheet. Then, choose the top 3 best
solutions. (you will use them again in
Step 6) Be
ready to discuss with the class your team’s solutions.
Step 6
(feasibility vs. effectiveness)
Write your top 3 ideas from Step 5 into the chart to help you
decide which solution is best. (there is a printed
one)
Answer: Which is the best
solution?

Conclusion
Students have conducted research by reading books/articles and
watching videos to find out the answers to the questions below. Student groups collaborated to create and
present a visual display to clarify, or support, ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
1.
What
is water pollution?
2.
What
are the causes & consequences of water pollution?
3.
How
do we know water pollution exists?
4.
What
is currently being done to stop water pollution?
5.
What
is a feasible and effective solution to the problem?
Connect/Extend: Write a
list, write a letter, or create a drawing.
Explain to your family and friends the causes and consequences of water
pollution, and things they can do to prevent water pollution.
