Introduction

Most students in the upper grades (5-8) classrooms, are having problems with the issue of wearing uniforms to school. Although the students feel better about themselves and it helps reduce competition amongst their peers, they still feel pressured when others don’t wear their uniforms.   They have a sense of self-worth when they wear their uniforms.  There is no need to point a finger at, or compete with the latest fad of fashions.  This is an issue that follows the students throughout their school term.  A sense of formality seems to help them get through the day without the mental strain of competition.  This has caused children to fight during lunch/recess period.  If everyone is wearing uniforms the behavior is somewhat modified and is better.

TASK

You have been asked by the middle school teachers, to research the problem of uniforms as a school-wide issue that concerns students across all grade levels in this elementary/middles school and to come up with a policy suggestion that you will present in the form of a discussion with the administration for adoption.

PROCESS

A—You will be working in groups, that have been chosen for you. You will meet in tech class and in your S. S class to work on the assignment.

B–Together, you will complete the worksheets to research the wearing of school uniforms:

            1-define the problem

            2-gather evidence

            3-identify causes of the problem

            4-describe and evaluate existing policies

            5-develop several solutions

            6-select the best policy

Complete the forms (each one is a link above)

C- After all the forms have been completed, you will present your findings, both for & against, to the lead teachers.

D- you will hold a debate in front of the teachers and the 6-8th grade students.  It will be recorded.

E-Next, you will develop & design solutions regarding uniforms for all the different grades

F- As a group, you will sit down with the school admin. & other leaders, to discuss the ideas and adoption of the policy.

EVALUATION

CONCLUSION

As a group, you have successfully researched the factors contributing to adaptation to school uniforms.  Given the information researched and received, you should be able to make a valid presentation to your classmates and school administration, about a school successfully adapting a uniform policy.
