Littering Around PS76Q
K-100
Mr. Byrne
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever seen garbage when you were walking to school? You probably have! There is a lot of litter around our school and within the community. Some people throw their garbage on the ground! Other people walk their dog and don’t clean up! Sometimes students have stepped in it at lunch and had to clean their shoes! We will be looking at littering around our school and why it is bad. K-100 will go on a WebQuest to learn about littering and solutions to littering. Our class will use the PPA process to try and solve this problem!
TASK
We will watch the videos and read websites about litter problems in and around PS76 and New York City! We will use our writing skills that we have been using in our persuasive writing to make a sign, write a letter, make a before and after or create a book to help make people aware of the problem and come up with solutions using the PPA process.
PROCESS/RESOURCES
As a Kindergarten class we will watch these videos and read these websites together. Students will then create their own writing to help increase awareness and come up with solutions using the PPA process. The six steps of the PPA process are:
1. define the problem,
2. gather the evidence,
3. identify the cause,
4. evaluate the existing policy,
5. develop a solution,
6. select the best solution.
Day 1 - Watch the litter problem in NYC video and have a class discussion about litter in the city and around our school.
Day 2 - Read through the National geographic article about litter. As a class we will go through the 6 steps of the PPA
Day 3 - Introduce the individual writing assignment to the students. In our persuasive writing unit we have been finding a problem and using writing to solve it. Students will choose to make a sign, write a letter, create a before and after or make a book describing the litter problem.
EVALUATION
CONCLUSION
During our WebQuest we learned about the littering problem in New York
