1: INTRODUCTION |
||||||||
Recently there has been an outbreak of
a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first
detected in China and which has now been discovered in almost 70 locations
internationally, including in the United States. More cases of COVID-19 are
likely to be identified in the coming days/weeks. |
||||||||
Step 2: TASK |
||||||||
The
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has hired YOU to inform
your community about the outbreak of the Coronavirus and help prevent it from
spreading. To do this, you will create a Public Service
Announcement (PSA) in the form of an audio recording teaching others how to
stay healthy. |
||||||||
Step 3: PROCESS |
||||||||
1. Research the Coronavirus
from the trusted sources below and take notes on paper. You must visit at
least 3 links.
i.
Preventing the spread
of illnesses in schools 2. Write a script for your
PSA. In order to do that, you will be following the steps of the Public Policy Analyst
or PPA to analyze the problem of Coronavirus. Make sure you click the PPA link
above before getting started! a. Use this format to write your script. b. Your recording should be no
longer than two minutes. c. You must teach about the
Coronavirus and ways to prevent it from spreading.
i.
In your podcast be sure to include: 1. What is the problem? (Step 1 of the PPA) 2. What evidence is there to
support the existence of the problem? (Step 2 of the PPA) 3. What is the cause of the
problem? (Step 3
of the PPA) 4. How can we solve the
problem? (Steps 5
& 6 of the
PPA) 3. Create your podcast! There
are 4 different options below. Read through them and choose the best one for
you. You could also come up with another way to create the podcast. a. If you have a Mac computer,
record your PSA using GarageBand. You can add music too! b. If you have a Mac computer,
record your PSA using QuickTime
Player. This podcast won’t have any music. Once the application is
open:
i.
Go to File
→ New Audio Recording
ii.
Record yourself reading aloud your script.
iii.
Make sure you speak in a clear voice.
iv.
Save your file as PSA_Your Name
to your desktop
v.
Have your parent/guardian email the file to me at
Ali@q300.org. c. If you have another
computer, you can download Audacity and record your voice using that. d. Another option is Buzzsprout. 4. Complete a self
reflection telling about how this project went. |
||||||||
Step 4: EVALUATION |
||||||||
Use the checklist below to ensure
you’ve completed all of the necessary requirements of this task. Your grade
will be determined based on how many tasks you complete.
Checklist: ❏ I took notes about what the Coronavirus is and how to prevent it
from spreading ❏ My notes are organized and easy to read. They may be a bulleted
list. ❏ I wrote a script for my PSA. ❏ My script is written in this format. ❏ I taught about the Coronavirus and ways to prevent it from
spreading. ❏ I recorded my PSA using QuickTime Player ❏ I spoke in a clear voice ❏ There is minimal background noise in my recording (other voices,
ruffling papers, breathing, etc.) ❏ My PSA is two minutes or less ❏ I saved my podcast and emailed it to Ali with the notes I took. ❏ I completed the self
reflection and wrote thoughtful
responses. |

about the Coronavirus on social media and even in some news reports. Thank
you for sharing research-based information obtained from trusted sources such
as the CDC and the World Health Organization and for doing your part to
prevent this virus from spreading in our school and community. |
