Since the 1970’s
childhood obesity has tripled in the United States. About 1 in every 5 school
aged students suffer from obesity. Childhood obesity is being significantly
overweight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity can lead to many
different health risks such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma,
diabetes and joint problems. However, childhood obesity doesn’t just affect
children physically, it can affect them mentally as well. Children can become
depressed, more anxious, have low self-esteem and can become targets of
bullying.
As a fifth grade
class, you will have to work with your classmates to help inform other kids on
why they should make healthy eating choices and how to fight obesity. In groups
of 4 you will complete your research. Your task is to create a tri-fold poster
using the 6 steps of the PPA that will highlight the problem and suggest
solutions. You will also write up your work in a 5 paragraph essay to submit
after your presentation. You will present your findings to the 4th grade class
to inform them about this ongoing problem.
1. You will work in groups of four. Make sure each student has a specific role in the research aspect.
2. You will use the PPA process to research the problem of childhood obesity and possible solutions that can help children fight this problem.
3. You will create a tri-fold poster that will create understanding and help students make healthier eating choices.
4. You will write a 5 paragraph essay on your findings.
5. Your tri-fold poster and essay should include the 6 steps of the PPA model:
*By clicking on each
step, a worksheet will become accessible to you to help organize your ideas.*
