INTRODUCTION-
(“A Brief History”)

P.S. 253Q opened as a new building in September of 2004.
In 2020, we renamed our school after Fallen
Officer, Randolph Holder, who spent most of his childhood growing up on the
very same street that our building is located on.

Since then, the
school start time has been 8:00am.
For the next few weeks, we will be
researching a serious problem here at RHS: Chronic Absenteeism and Lateness!
In order for students to learn, they
need to be in school. Together we will learn more about this problem and
determine what steps we can take to improve attendance at our school.
Collect and Analyze Data: Now, let’s
dive into the information! Take a look at the pictures below to see how
attendance has changed over the years here at RHS.
*School attendance
data from 2004-2020*

*School attendance
data from 2020-today*

What do
you notice about the most current attendance information? What does it make you
wonder?

Post-pandemic,
NYC Schools are reporting this as a citywide issue:
TASK-
-      Create an “SCC” Student Created Calendar
highlighting your personal interests in Events/Subjects/Classes (for the
upcoming/current month)
-      Deliver an Oral Presentation

6 Steps of the Public Policy Analyst
(PPA)
Students are chronically late and/or absent at P.S.
253Q, The Randolph Holder School For Social Justice.
In addition to examining the data provided from the
NYS school report card, students will monitor their individual class’s
attendance and lateness for two weeks using a data tracker created by the
teacher.
           Researchers,
now it’s time for you to collect data!
In the
chart below, record the number of students absent or late from your class for
the next two weeks.
| | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 | Day 9 | Day 10 |
| # of Students Absent | | | | | | | | | | |
| # of Students Late | | | | | | | | | | |

collected? What does it make you wonder? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4.                       Evaluate an
Existing Policy:
*Members of the Child Center (Ms. Nicole, Ms.
Daniela, Ms. Kelsey) will come into the classes to share current
attendance/lateness issues and the efficacy of the current incentives.*
STUDENTS-
Let’s talk to the members of our CBO, Ms. Nicole, Ms. Daniela, and Ms. Kelsey.
As they speak to you, write down any important information you learn!

Note Taking Graphic Organizer
| What are the current issues with absenteeism
and lateness here at RHS? | What are some current incentives or policies
you have put in place to improve it? | How effective have those policies been? |
| | | |
You will work with a partner to identify upcoming
events, subjects/topics and “specials” that you are interested in for the
upcoming month at school.
-      Together, you will create a calendar to share with your
parents/guardians noting key dates and times, while expressing your interest
& the importance of attending these events and classes on time.
With
a partner come up with possible solutions to improve absenteeism and lateness
here at RHS.

Now,
create a poster to share with your classmates. What is your solution to address
chronic absenteeism and lateness here at RHS? Be sure to include the research
you have conducted and why your solution is the best.
6.                       Select the
Best Solution (Feasibility vs.
Effectiveness):
Students share their presentations
with classmates, CBO members, and the administration.
Feedback is provided in the form of
GLOWS and GROWS centered around the efficacy/feasibility of each student’s
solution.
EVALUATION-

*To
ensure a respectful and active learning environment while listening to
individual presentations, the students will grade each other on the oral
presentation rubric.

CONCLUSION-
A student who is late for class is
disruptive to the instructor, to their fellow classmates, and to his/her own
education. Excessive absences or
tardiness shows poor planning and preparation, and lack of motivation and
commitment on the part of the student.
PLEASE
NOTE: In the elementary school setting, the responsibility is on the parent to
ensure their child arrives safely, and is present and/or on time. Hopefully,
this web quest activity motivates you to do your part to develop good habits
that help your parents (for example- get a good night’s sleep in order to wake
up on time).
