Too Much Waste in School

INTRODUCTION

Mrs. Reimer has announced there is too much waste in our school!  As she walks throughout the building, she is noticing waste in the stairs, halls, floors, and classrooms.  We have to act on this to help keep our school clean and safe for all.  Are you ready to commit and help our school?

TASK

The goal of this WebQuest is for you to have an understanding of why school waste is a problem in our school.  We signed a CARE contract at the beginning of the school year with the promise that Children are Responsible and  Respectful, Everyday.  We have to decide if we  are going to keep the promise we made, and show how we CARE! You will work in groups to find a solution to this problem.

Your Task:

  1. You will participate in classroom discussions about the problem and gather evidence to support your findings.
  2. You will research how school waste is harmful to schools, and how this impacts us.
  3. You will create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) short video/presentation through use of flipgrid/powerpoint informing our PS 100 School Community about school waste: causes, impact, and possible solutions.
  4. You will also create a poster for every classroom to hang up asking for support from our school community to help decrease school waste.
  5. You will report after your PSA and posters have been sent to the school community if there is an improvement or the problem still exists?

PROCESS/RESOURCES

To complete this project you will need to follow the 6 Steps of the PPA

  1. Define the Problem
  2. Gather Evidence
  3. Identify Causes
  4. Evaluate Existing Public Policies
  5. Develop Public Policy Solutions
  6. Selecting the Best Policy Solution (feasibility vs effectiveness)

Here is the layout of this project and what you will be expected to do by the end of this project:

Roles for Group/Table Work:

Team Captain: This student will be responsible for going over task with the group, making sure everyone is doing their part, staying on task, and participate in all parts of project

Researcher: This role can be for 2 people depending on size of group and will be responsible for finding articles, videos, resources connected to the problem and how to solve it.

Note Taker: This student will be responsible for taking important notes on the group chart collected from the research portion to use when creating the PSA and Poster

Artist: This student will be responsible for the creative design of the poster presenting information to the school community- they must use factual information from the research to include in the classroom posters.

Our task will be broken up into 8 days:

Day 1-Day 2: (Define the Problem/Gather Evidence) Classroom discussion: Students will participate in discussion about school waste and why this is a problem. You must choose your roles today before you begin the next phase of the project. *We will have a brainstorm session to come up with your thoughts about school waste and why this is a problem.*

Survey/Collect data on how much school waste you see.

       Include location

       Include time

       Include items

       Include frequency

Day 3-Day 4: (Identify Causes/Evaluate Existing Policies) In groups you will research how school waste is harmful to schools. Make sure to take notes and find not only the reason why this is harmful, but what can be done to help fix this problem.  You should also research policies in place to help with school waste.

Day 5: (Develop Public Policy Solutions) Create posters to help promote the decrease of school waste in our building and hang up in every classroom.

Make sure you have a title in your poster

Create a statement to promote what the problem is and how we can help

       Must be colorful

       Include your class and name

Day 6-Day 7: PSA (flipgrid/powerpoint): You must work on your PSA as a group

Watch these videos on how to

1: set up your PSA How to make a PSA

2: an example of a PSA No Second Chances: A Pool Safely PSA

Your group must follow these steps for your PSA:

*Important*

If you choose flipgrid option:

(Use your notes to come up with your statement or thoughts that you

want to mention first so you are prepared when you begin filming)

What should be in your video/presentation?

  1. State the problem
  2. Include visuals of school waste around the building
  3. What causes waste around our school?
  4. What are ways we can fix this problem? (How can our school community help?)
  5. If using flipgrid remember your video cannot be more than 2 minutes long
  6. If using PowerPoint you must label each of your slides with which part you are presenting.
  7. Be sure to include your resources of what you researched and why this is important.

Day 8: (Selecting the Best Policy Solution)

Team Captains will check in with classrooms to see if School Waste has decreased.  If there is still school waste, what can we think of next to help fix our problem?

CONCLUSION

Mrs. Reimer sends her thanks for working on this project and spreading awareness for School Waste in our school community.  You successfully used the PPA to find possible solutions to the problem.  By keeping our promise to our CARE contract we will be responsible children everyday making sure our school stays clean!  Your efforts are not unnoticed, and together WE can make a difference!
