How Can We Respectfully State Our Opinions?

B. Larsen
Introduction: Background
At our school, we have encountered some issues with students respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another. We have had class discussions about respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another.
You and your friend will be working together to solve the problem as to why
everyone is not respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another in our
school community.
With your friend, you will do the following:
Task:
Remember to use the information from the resources that you learned about during your research.
Process
Using the PPA Process, you will follow the six steps to solve the problem of the lack of respect between students in the school when stating their opinions. The six steps of the PPA Process are: define the problem, gather the evidence, identify the cause, evaluate the existing policy, develop a solution, select the best solution.
Day 1: Define the Problem
At our school, we have encountered some issues with students respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another. We have had class discussions about respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another. Why are students having these problems? What is the cause of these problems? Brainstorm with your partner some reasons as to why students are encountering these problems. With your partner, discuss times where you have seen students not respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another. Make a list with your partner, then you will write three to four sentences about why you think students aren’t respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another.
Day 2 Gather the Evidence
With your partner, read and discuss the benefits of respectfully agreeing and disagreeing with one another. Write three reasons why respectfully agreeing and disagreeing is important and how it might help students to be more respectful of each other's opinions.
Use the resources below to help you learn more about how you can be respectful with agreeing and disagreeing with one another.

Day 3: Gather the Evidence
Watch how to make a google survey: How to Make a Google Survey
Step 1: With your partner, you will create a google survey that we will send out to the school about how students can be respectful when answering questions.
Step 2: Create the 1st question: “Have you felt that you aren’t respected when answering a question? Answer Yes or No.
Step 3: Create a 2nd question: Who has not been respectful to you and your opinion, A classmate, a teacher, or another adult in the building?
Step 4: Create a 3rd Question: Why do you think people are not acting respectful in our school community?
Step 5: Create a 4th Question: What do you think can be done to help others be more respectful when agreeing and disagreeing?
If we can’t make a google survey, we can make our own paper survey and gather the data from each of our classes.
Day 4: Analyze the Data
Let’s analyze the data! What have we found out!
Write down 4 to 5 sentences about what you have learned from the data we gathered.
Day 4: Identify the Causes
Based on the data we’ve collected, why do you think others aren’t being respectful when agreeing and disagreeing in the school building?
Day 4: Evaluate the Existing Policy
Now that we know more about students not respectfully agreeing and disagreeing in our school community and what is causing the it, let’s discuss the policies we have in place at our school to help our school community with respecting each other’s opinions:

Remember to use the information from the resources that you learned about during your research.
