PS 336Q Class 501

︵︵‿୨♡୧‿︵︵

INTRODUCTION:

Young children learn through play, experiences, and positive relationships. Sharing is Caring is a great song for demonstrating to kids the importance of sharing with others.

Our classroom has 15 students and 2 teachers. How can we share toys and materials so that the students in our classroom can learn positive ways to interact with our classmates? We will solve this using the PPA Public Policy Analyst Process.

TASK:

During a large group discussion, you will ‘turn and talk’ with your classmates and teachers to create a list of ‘Community Expectations.’ These will be used to help guide students during pay times while sharing toys and manipulatives.

PROCESS:

The students will sit on the rug during whole-group instruction time. The teacher will use chart paper to document all the responses of the students. Each student will have an opportunity to answer guiding questions while creating their ‘Community Expectations’.

Some guiding questions asked by the teacher include:

1- How can we help our classmates feel happy?

2- How can we be a good friend?

3- How would you feel if your friend didn’t share with you?

4- Which words can we use to share with our classmates?

Below are the 6 steps to the PPA which you would use to solve this problem:

6.  Select the Best Solution  (Feasibility vs. Effectiveness)

EVALUATION:

Below is a rubric which will be used to evaluate each students’ understanding of the task: The teacher will check the box indicating YES, SOMETIMES or NOT YET.

CATEGORY

YES

SOMETIMES

NOT YET

Able to identify at least one classroom agreement which helps students share/ manage materials.

Able to explain to a teacher or classmate why classroom agreements help with sharing toys/ manipulatives.

CONCLUSION:

The goal of this activity was to help students learn positive strategies they can use to interact with their classmates. Involving students to co-create the classroom rules or agreements allow them to have a greater understanding and responsibility for their actions in the classroom.
