Recycling at P.S. 128

Problem

Some of us have noticed that many of our fellow leaders may not be throwing out their trash and recycling correctly. In honor of celebrating Earth Day, it would be an excellent project for us to use what we are learning about recycling and composting to help fix this problem in our school. The principal has given us the opportunity to show how we can be leaders, set an example for everyone, and encourage them to sort their trash into the right spot.

Task-

To practice social skills and communication to express ourselves and explain our goals to our fellow leaders.

  1. You will conduct surveys, which are handed out at lunch for the students to complete. You will also conduct surveys for the adults in the school.
  2. Your job is to create posters or pamphlets that we will present and hand out/hang up to help everyone at lunch to understand the importance of sorting their trash and how they can do it.
  3. You will help figure out a solution that can encourage leadership and continue even after we finish this project.

Process –

Follow the task for each day and watch the videos.

Day 1: Gather evidence - What are the words that describe the importance of recycling? What questions can we ask others to find out what they know? Create surveys.

Day 4: Evaluate existing policy- Take pictures, use observations, and data to see what rules we already have for trash and if they are/are not being followed. https://youtu.be/TG5vwcLoNik

Day 5: Solution - Use the data, pictures, and observations to help explain the importance of and how to properly recycle and throw away trash in the lunchroom by creating posters and pamphlets that will be shared with other students. These will also help us communicate with our fellow leaders in the lunchroom.

-      Groups 1 and 2 will create posters for the lunch room. Groups 3 and 4 will create pamphlets that will be handed out.

Conclusion

We asked the following questions:

    Why sorting trash is important

If it is a problem in our school

    Why it is a problem

What rules are there that are or are not being followed

And what solutions can we find to help solve the problem

We learned that we can practice problem-solving and our good social and communication skills to be leaders for our fellow students in school and encourage them to be a part of the solution in a positive and respectful way. This is good leadership!
