PROPER NUTRITION- What Do We Need to Know?
John Dewey High School- Health Education
INTRODUCTION:
|
● With a growing number of at least 40% of NYC Public School children facing obesity, (many of who are Black & Latino students), there is a major need for putting Nutrition Education on the forefront. The NYC High School Curriculum only offers 1 mandatory term of Health Education, and it only includes a 3-week unit on Nutrition. Although New York City Public School students are offered daily breakfast and lunch, they are left with family autonomy for dinner and weekends. Families have limited resources on how and what to feed their family in a healthy way. If high schoolers are given proper Nutrition Education, they will then be able to turnkey it to home life, or even convince their families to seek out the necessary tools to help with prioritizing nutrition at home.

TASK |
Students will take on the role as a representative of the NYC Health Department that works in the Nutrition Services role. They will go through the steps of the PPA to create a solution about the Adolescent Obesity Epidemic in NYC High Schools.
TIMEFRAME: ● 10 Days |
PROCESS |
Students will work in groups of 3-4 students. It will follow the process of the PPA.
Day 1: (DEFINE THE PROBLEM)- Students will read about the Adolescent Obesity Epidemic in NYC. Students will also watch a video, Obesity Epidemic in America. Students will then fill out this sheet. 3,2,1 to write down what they learned about the problem.
Day 2: (GATHER THE EVIDENCE) Students will take a Survey to assess themselves on how well they know the MyPlate guidelines. After the survey is complete, students will learn about My Plate Guidelines. Survey one peer in school, and one family member at home to see what they know about Nutrition.
Day 3: (NAME THE CAUSE) Group Share Out: Based on the reading, video, and surveys, answer the following questions: a. What are some key takeaways? b. What is the cause of Adolescent Obesity, and how do high schools attribute to it? c. What is a common theme that you found throughout all of the evidence?
Day 4: (EVALUATE AN EXISTING POLICY/ SOLUTION) Students will assess the NYC High School Health Curriculum. They will also look over the Requirements to graduate from high school. Students will determine if they receive enough education on Nutrition.
Day 5 -7: (DEVELOP A SOLUTION) Students will work with their original groups to create a 60 second PSA. It will be in the form of a short video that will be shown to families in NYC schools which outlines the obesity epidemic in NYC, as well as some ways that learning about Nutrition can help with meal planning at home.
Day 8-10: (SELECT THE BEST SOLUTION) Using Canva, students will work with their family at home to develop a 1 week-long menu that uses the tools that were learned, and incorporates MyPlate Guidelines, mixed with traditional family meals. |

CONCLUSION |
This project’s mission was to study what you know about the My Plate Guidelines and Nutrition as a whole. We began by taking a personal survey, and then administering the survey to a peer, and family member. The creation of the 60 second PSA will hopefully shine the light on the overall adolescent obesity epidemic in NYC. By learning the basics of nutrition, and what a plate should have, students will collaborate with their family to develop a month-long menu that merges traditional food. This was done through following the PPA 6 steps. |
