Can You Name 5 Women Artists?

You and your classmates have been tasked with creating a poster addressing the lack of female representation in art in the United States, why representation is important, and solutions for equal representation.

 

 

Task:

          Students will research the reason why women are under-represented in art as well-known female artists.

Using the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) you will research the reason why women are under-represented in art. You will be using the steps of the PPA to solve this national problem. In addition, you will also be researching a female artist. After completing the steps of the PPA and developing a solution, you will share your findings by creating a poster. Your poster will be created in the style of your researched artist.  Be sure to reflect your artist’s style while including information from all of the given resources.

Think about the articles and the podcast excerpt that you listened to, what can we do as a community to increase female representation in the arts?

 

Poster

Your task is to develop an 11 by 14 poster that shows the problem, the lack of female representation in arts, and shows a proposed solution. You will be creating this poster in the style of a well-known female artist of your choice. You may use any two-dimensional medium of your choice. Ex: Color pencils, water color, marker.

Conclusion

Reflect on what you have learned throughout this PPA research project. Consider the impact of the inequity of female artists in this field, to your career choices as an artist and other females considering entering this field. How do you envision your proposed solutions making a difference? Take this opportunity to connect your learning to real-world issues and extend your thinking by brainstorming additional ways to address the lack of female representation in art

By completing this web quest and creating a poster you have not only gained a deeper understanding of the challenges that lack of representation for women create in not only NYC schools but in the competitive art field, you have developed critical thinking, research, and presentation skills essential for addressing complex social issues.
