Air Pollution In
New York City
Madiya Ali
P.S. 238 The Anne Sullivan School
Class 812
INTRODUCTION:
Tiny particles of harmful chemicals being released into the air can cause problems for all living things. When this occurs, we call it “air pollution”. Air pollution can occur when chemicals, including forms of gas, are spread into the air, causing the air to be unsanitary.
Directions: Please watch the YouTube video and read this article to get more insight on air pollution.

TASK
Ms. Ali has directed her students to get into groups and create a physical hard-copy poster that demonstrates the effects air pollution has on the society in New York City. A teacher model will be provided so students know what the guidelines are. In groups, each student will be provided with a role, for example, data analyst, to identify what the largest cause of air pollution is and how to address/solve the problem. Students are to create posters which will be hung around the school and on display for staff and other students as well. The posters will be uploaded on the main classroom page for parents to see as well.
PROCESS
Using the PPA Process, you will follow the six steps to solve the problem of pollution. The six steps, in order, are: define the problem, gather the evidence, identify the cause, evaluate the existing policy, develop a solution, select the best solution. Each step will be added into the project as a section, INCLUDING visuals on the poster.
Use the sources listed below to help you complete your poster:

DAY 1: Define the Problem & Gather the Evidence
You and your group will define the problem and gather evidence to prove it exists. (Use the resources linked above)
● What is air pollution?
● What current evidence can you find that points to air pollution being a problem in NYC?
DAY 2: Identify the Cause & Evaluate the Existing Policy
Yesterday, you identified the problem and gathered evidence to prove it exists. Today, you and your group will identify the causes of the problem and evaluate an existing policy that addresses this problem.
● What are the major causes of air pollution in NYC?
● How does air pollution affect society?
● What existing policy is there that involves air pollution in NYC?
DAY 3: Develop a solution & Select the best solution
Today, you will work with your group to develop solutions to the problem and what we can do to address air pollution in NYC.
Then, you will select what the best solution may be from the possible solutions you identified.
● List some solutions to help prevent or decrease air pollution.
● Out of these solutions, identify the best solution.
EVALUATION
CONCLUSION
Students were able to create a poster on the topic of Air Pollution in NYC. They were able to define air pollution, identify the causes of air pollution, develop solutions and create a poster explaining the importance of trying to decrease, and hopefully, prevent further air pollution in NYC.
