Wasting Paper

Introduction

Did you know “that the average office worker uses about 27 pounds of paper or about 10,000 sheets of paper in a year? Only 5% of that paper was made from recycled paper and 50% of it will end up in landfills.”  What can we do to solve this problem?

Task

Students will be arranged in groups of 4 to create a brochure that explains ways we can solve the problem of paper waste.

**You will act as a local environment group in Manhattan. You will gather information about currently polices in Manhattan regarding the issue of paper waste. You will research information to determine the problem and solution for this issue. You will also amend old policies or develop new policies that will address the issue of paper waste.

Each group member will be responsible for gathering supporting evidence for their specific part which will be incorporated into the brochure. The group can work together to complete the worksheets from PPA Process.

Writing Task: Use the information from worksheets 3 & 5 to create a summary (no less than 3 paragraphs) explaining the impact of paper waste on our environment and what could people do help change it?

Be sure it has:

·        An introduction

·        A  conclusion

·        You  include the information from worksheets 3 & 5 of the PPA process

**All team members should be prepared to give an oral presentation about the information they prepared for the brochure.

Process & Resources

A.    Complete steps 1-6. Open the links to retrieve the worksheets. Complete all the worksheets included in the PPA (Public Policy Analysis) process first. Then use the information from the worksheets to help your group create a brochure. All members should be prepared to be a part of the oral presentation.

1.     Define the ProblemWork with group members to answer the questions on the worksheet. Here you will discuss the information you will start researching and what information each member will be responsible for gathering and presenting for the brochure.

      2.  Gather the Evidence - Each member will complete a worksheet. Each team member will record the problem they were assigned to gather the evidence about. The resources used for supporting evidence for the problem must also be recorded.

3.  Identify the Causes: Identify some of reasons people waste such large amounts of paper? Make sure you include facts and details from the evidence that was gathered.

4. Evaluate an Existing Policy

There are policies in place regarding recycling paper but they are not highly enforced. Identify and list the resource that shows what the city/state is currently doing now to recycle paper.

5. Develop Solutions: What can be done to fix the problem? List at least 3 new polices that you can be created to help solve the problem. You can also amend old polices. Be sure to specify the actual government or government agency that would be responsible for enforcing the policy.

6.  Select the Best Solution (Feasibility vs. Effectiveness) what solution would people most likely follow? How effective would this solution be in solving or decreasing the problem? Would this solution be too costly to enforce?

B.   Video: How to create a brochure in a Word Document (watch first)

Steps for creating a brochure:

Make a draft of the six panels. There are three panels on each side of the paper. The six panels need to be planned out on a piece of loose leaf paper first.

·        Front Panel: This should have the title, name of the students, and basic information about the topic. A picture, clip art or small piece of artwork about the topic is a nice addition.

·        Other Five Panels: Display information with subtitles, pictures, clip art, and/or designs. You will need to choose the most important information about the problem that you want displayed in the brochure. The key is to have no more than three sub topics per panel. One or two is usually the best.

·        Once the brochure is planned, the group can begin working on their final product.

1.     Open Microsoft Word

2.     Click on the Office button icon (in the upper left corner with the 4 colorful squares). A menu will drop down. Select “new”.

3.     Under Template scroll down and select “Brochure and booklets.”

4.     Under Brochures and booklets select “brochures”

5.     Several types of brochures will appear. Select “Recruiting  brochure for Job Fair”
