Unhealthy Eating Habits!
Apple Pie or
Apple Slices?
Let’s help each other make healthy food
choices!
A WebQuest created by
M. Crupi, P.S. 194M
Introduction:
Do you like to run
around with friends, ride your bike or play a sport?
Of course you do! Running
around with friends, riding your bike or playing a sport are physical
activities. This means you need lots of ENERGY to do them. Many kids are
choosing foods that don’t give them the energy they need to be physically
active! Kids are reaching for candy bars, potato chips, cookies and other “junk
food” that is making them tired and unable to be active. Too much junk food is
no good!
This is leading to a
lot of unhealthy kids! When you each junk your body cannot create the energy it
needs to be active. This means running, biking and playing sports would be very
difficult. Being ACTIVE is an important part of being HEALTHY. This is where
YOU come in! We need your help to get kids reaching for the healthy choice so
they can have the energy to be a healthy and active kid!
Task:
1.
As a
class we will gather information.
2.
You will
work in groups to create a poster.
3.
We will
work as a class to make a video.
Process:
As a class we will gather
information to complete the following steps and answer the following questions:
Step 1: What is the problem? (work
sheet)
Step 2: What is the proof? (work sheet)
Step 3: What are the causes? (work
sheet)
Step 4: What is our school already doing to fix the problem? (work sheet)
Step 5: What should be done to solve the problem? (work sheet)
Step 6: What is the best solution? (work
sheet)
Poster
Now that we have
chosen the best solution you will work in groups of 5 to create a poster. Each
group will be assigned to one of the five food groups: Fruits, Vegetables,
Grains, Protein and Dairy. You will work with you group to create a poster that
will suggest healthy choices for your food group.
These food groups are
the building blocks for a healthy diet. It will be your job to get kids like
you thinking more carefully about what goes on their plate or in their bowl or
cup.
In your
poster you should:
· Illustrate and label healthy food
choices from your food group (All group
members)
· Tell how much you should eat from
your food group to be healthy (One group
member)
· Tell two health benefits (Two group members)
· Tips to help eat from your food group
(One group member)
· Last, you must attach 1 member’s copy
of the PPA notes we took as a class!
You will be provided
with a poster board, makers and other supplies to create your poster.
Before creating your
poster you will record the information you are responsible for in your Reader’s
Notebook. Once the teacher checks your notes you will add your information to
your poster. You are free to design your poster however you would like as long
as all the required information in there!
Each group will have
time on the computer to find their information.
Class Video
We will also be
working as a class to make a music video that we will share with the entire
school. The video will teach the students at P.S. 194M about the five food groups and
smart food choices they should make!
