INTRODUCTION
Have
you ever downloaded an mp3 online and never had to pay money? Have you ever downloaded or watched a movie
or song online through a gateway site such as YouTube or a Peer to Peer site
such as Limewire?
How often do you do these activities (if you do)? Everyday, thousands of American Citizens
illegally download music and movies. Can
we change this mentality or is it too late?
TASK
Students
will be asked to research what illegal downloading is, how it breaks copyright
law, and how it is affecting the music and movie industries. They will research the information through
this Webquest in music class and online through this website and then create a powerpoint presentation, podcast,
or some other form of communication to present heir argument and solutions to
the class and Mr. Crissman.
PROCESS/RESOURCES
We
will use the PPA steps to help guide us through our situation:
1.
Define the problem
with downloading illegal material.
Students will work with partners to fill out the worksheet and then a
class discussion will follow openly talking about the problem. Worksheet
#1
2.
Gather the evidence
using the Resource List* at the bottom of this page to research articles,
videos, and commentary about Illegal Downloads.
Students will gather their info while starting to formulate the cause of
the problem. Worksheet
#2
3.
Identify the
Causes of illegal downloading. How
did we get to the point where downloading illegally has become socially
acceptable? Is it okay? Why or why not? Worksheet
#3
4.
Evaluate existing
policies and laws about illegal downloading. Use the links in the Resource List* at the
bottom of the page about what the law says about illegal downloading. Is it fair?
Are YOU breaking the law currently?
Should they be changed? Worksheet
#4
5.
Develop Solutions
to illegal downloading. What can be done
about illegal downloading? If you could
do anything to solve the problem, what would you do? Are there solutions that have not been
thought of or proposed? Worksheet
#5
6.
Select the Best
Solution by evaluating the Feasibility versus the Effectiveness of each of
your solutions. Which one of your
solutions has the best balance of being fease-able
and effective? Whichever solution you
come to is the one you will be presenting to the class via the Powerpoint, podcast, or other form of communication. Worksheet

EVALUATION
Students
will be evaluated on each step throughout the process. As worksheets are completed, the teacher will
assess their progress grading each worksheet individually. They will not be graded based on the content,
but based on the effort put forth. Then
students will give their final presentation and will be evaluated based on the
rubric below:
CONCLUSION
Students
will understand why copyrights exist and how to make sure that they are no
longer (themselves) breaking the law.
They will also consider the mentality of consumers in today’s economy
and how the faster changing world of technology has had serious legal
ramifications on the real world.
