P.S. 28M

Introduction

So, you finally got the latest iPad, tablet or cell phone you’ve been asking for all year! Now, what do you plan to do with the old one?

Since 2010 consumers in the United States have produced more than 3 million tons of e-waste annually. What is e-waste? E-waste refers to discarded electrical or electronic equipment such as  tvs, desktops, computer monitors, dvd players and cell phones. Some of these devices contain materials inside which can be harmful to the environment if they are disposed of improperly. To help address disposal concerns, New York State has enacted new regulations regarding the disposal of e-waste and New York City has developed an “E-cycle” program for e-waste recycling.

Task

To make sure that our school community is informed about proper e-waste disposal, The Wright Brothers School has appointed you to its Public Information Committee. It will be your responsibility to  motivate families in the P.S. 28 community to follow the new   e-cycling procedures. You will create a PowerPoint Public Service Announcement informing the school community about the new regulations and your suggested policy on how the community can comply with them.

You will work in groups of four and your committee may assign member roles (for example, researcher or editor), if you wish.

1.  You will use the PPA steps to research the e-waste problem.

2.  You will create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in PowerPoint, for viewing in the school’s auditorium, which will     inform the school community about the e-waste problem and how we can collaborate to resolve it.

Process/Resources

Use the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) Process to research and develop a method for encouraging community cooperation on e-cycling. Let’s motivate the community to dispose of e-waste responsibly!
