Keeping Our School Clean

What Can We Do???

PS. 28

New York, NY

Selines Padilla-3rd Grade

Introduction:

Have you ever seen a fellow student throwing trash on the floor of their classroom, down the steps heading to the gym, auditorium and cafeteria or on the bathroom floor? Well, you’re not alone.  There is a BIG problem in our school with students not disposing of their garbage properly. We should look for effective ways to “KEEP OUR SCHOOL CLEAN.”

Task:

As a class we will create posters to display around the school building to remind students that as members of the Public School 28 community we should keep our school clean. We will also have “Clean Watchers” to give out tickets for students who they catch doing the right thing

Process:

Step One: We will review and incorporate in our projects the six steps in The Public Policy Analyist:

v       Step 1: Define the problem

o  Worksheet1: "Defining the social problem"(MSWORD)

v    ·       Step 2: Gather the Evidence

o  Worksheet2: "Gathering evidence of the problem"(MSWORD)

v    ·       Step 3: Identify the Causes

o  Worksheet3: "Identifying the cause of the problem"(MSWORD)

v    ·       Step 4: Evaluate a Policy

o  Worksheet4: "Evaluating Existing Public Policies"(MSWORD)

v    ·       Step 5: Develop Solutions

o  Worksheet5: "Developing public policy solutions"(MSWORD)

v    ·       Step 6: Select the Best Solution

o  Worksheet6: "Selecting the best public policy solution" (MSWORD)

v    Step Two:  After each group is familiar with the PPA, We will break up into six groups in the classroom; each group will be in charge of creating posters for each grade (K-5) in our building.

v    Step Three:  We will speak to the Principal so we can have a school assembly and have all the students in the school be aware of our initiative.

v    Step Four: We will place posters strategically in the high traffic areas of our school building.

v    Step Five: We will have an awards ceremony to highlight the individual students and/or classes that have made an improvement in our school community either through keeping their classroom, hallway, bathroom and/or lunch table clean.
