Introduction

You are a 4th grade teacher at Villa Maria Academy.  You notice more and more fighting going on among the children in your class.  You begin to wonder what is causing this violent behavior.  Many of the students often talk about the video games they play.  You realize that some of them are spending numerous hours playing these games at home.  You are also aware of the fact that many of these games contain fighting and violence.  There is no single explanation for the rise in youth violence.  There are many different factors which could cause it, yet you can’t help but wonder, “Could these video games be leading to aggressive behavior in your students?”

Task

You have been invited to participate in a teacher’s discussion on youth violence.  Your task is to develop a proposal for reducing the occurrence of youth violence in schools.   To prepare for the meeting you will research this topic on the Internet and answer the following questions:

          ³ What is youth violence?

³ What are some examples of violence in today’s video games?

³ What are some ways to recognize violent warning signs in others?

³ What effect can youth violence have in adulthood?

³ What are some ways schools can prevent this violence from occurring?

³ What is your opinion of the current public policy and what can be done to

          improve it?

You will then prepare a Powerpoint presentation consisting of at least 6 slides which you can present at the teacher’s meeting.
