 Laws and Values

 

Background:

 None (Introductory Lesson)

 

Objectives:

  1.  Given a variety of situations, the student will be able to recognize that laws impact upon every aspect of life.
  2. Students will be able to identify specific values protected by various laws.
  3. Students will be able to develop and support generalizations concerning "laws" and "values."

 

Materials:

 Introductory Worksheet, "I"

 

Time Required:

 1-2 class periods

 

Procedures:

 Part 1. The teacher tells students, "I am going to give you some personal biographical information. Each time that I say something that could be related to law, raise your hands, and shout out, ‘Legal!’. " Teacher: "My name is... I live at... I am married/single... I am a teacher at...etc." Also, the teacher mention interests, hobbies and other activities until the list of items reaches eight items. Each time have students explain how that item is related to law, and a value protected by that law; have them record the information on the worksheet.

 

Performance Assessment:

Toward the conclusion of the lesson, have students respond orally or in writing to the following regarding what they learned from the lesson:

• How much do laws affect our daily lives? Show how this lesson influenced your answer.

• Based on the lesson, what do we mean by "values."?

• How are laws and values interrelated? Give examples to support your answer.
