Being separated from their parents or having inconsistent living conditions for long periods of time can create changes in thoughts and behavior patterns. As almost 2,000 have been separated from their parents due to the Trump Administration's new immigration policy. On April 6, 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would adopt a “zero-tolerance” policy toward every person caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. Though crossing the border illegally for the first time is a misdemeanor, usually punishable by a few days in an immigration detention center and then deportation, these migrants are being prosecuted as if they had committed a more serious criminal offense and may be held in federal prisons. As Vox points out, because children cannot go into federal prisons, they are being separated from their parents, with no idea when or if they will see them again. Physicians and Psychologists say these migrant children could suffer both short-term and life-long mental health issues as a result. You will create new policies that help families reunite faster. Many times families are separated for years and years.

The mayor has asked your class to help formulate new immigration policies that will help immigrant families in New York City reunite more quickly. You will work in teams of four. You will use the PPA steps. Your teacher will assign you to your group and will give a role to play. As a member of the group you will use the internet resources (see Resource section below) to research problems that immigrant children face. By the end of your analysis you will write a speech that you will deliver to the Mayor and others at your school during Parent Engagement Day. Then you will express your proposal for new immigration policies that helps families reunite more quickly.

Your teacher will assign you to one of the 5 groups to examine this problem. Each group will have to decide on roles for each of the four students. Follow the roles below. Your speech paper should be clearly written, and follow the PPA steps: in analyzing the problem. You can find some Information on speech writing: Click on the link below

For your oral presentation, you should limit your time to 10-15 minutes. Speak clearly and make eye contact with your audience.

You will be graded as a group as well as your individual contributions and teamwork.

Each person in the group will have a role:

Coordinator - Organize the group so your speech is ready by the due date

Technology - Start working on the speech using Microsoft Word

Researcher- Will make sure that the research information is included in the speech. Keep record of your resources. Stay focus on the original problem.

Oral speaker/Presenter- Will give the speech to the Mayor.

The goal of this paper has been to provide information and to come up with new policies about the impact of the immigrant children separated from their parents at the US borders. To better inform the policy discussion about what kind of immigration policy should be adopted in the future. Absent a change in policy. Thus, immigration’s impact will continue to grow if current trends continue.
The mayor wanted to thank you for your hard work and dedication to help solve the problem of the immigrant children left at the US border. Immigrant families and children need our help. Below are recommended organizations you can support to help keep families together.
