INTRODUCTION

After four years of bitter fighting, the Union had won the Civil War.  Even so, problems remained as Americans tried to find the best way to restore the union and rebuild the nation.  This time period where the United States worked to bring North and South back together is referred to as the Reconstruction Era.  During Reconstruction the nation faced many political, economic, and social challenges.

TASK

Your task is to use the American History Public Policy Analyst (AHPPA) and the provided internet resources to research and illustrate the challenges faced by the nation during Reconstruction along with proposed solutions to those problems.  On the provided worksheets, you will record evidence of the political, economic, and social challenges, record the causes of those problems, as well as proposed solutions to the problems.  Using that information, you will create three illustrations.  The illustrations will demonstrate the challenges and solutions proposed (one illustration for each type of problem: political, economic, and social).

PROCESS

Using the AHPPA and the Internet Resources Linked Below:

1) Identify the Problem: On your Reconstruction Challenges and Solutions chart, identify one political, economic, and social problem facing the United States during the Reconstruction Era.

2) Gather Evidence of the problems faced:  On your chart, record evidence of the political, economic, and social problems you identified in step one.  In other words, you will explain and give details of the problem.

3) Determine the Causes of the problems:  Next, identify what was the main cause of each of the problems you previously identified.

4) Examine the Solutions (Policies): Identify the attempts made to fix the problems.

5) Illustrate the Problems and Solutions for each type of problem: Create three illustrations that demonstrate your three problems and the attempts to solve each problem.  Use the information collected under evidence and causes (steps 2 & 3) to add detail to your illustrations.
