Introduction:

There were several reform movements that took place between 1820 and 1860. Some of these reforms included the abolitionist movement, temperance movement, prison reform, and education reform. Because women, students, African Americans, and the mentally ill faced discrimination it was necessary to make changes and push for reform. Because you are living in a democracy you can express your beliefs and make a difference! These groups did not have that opportunity, yet fought for the rights enjoyed by many today. Looking back to the past you realize just how much Americans have achieved.

In this web quest, you will be asked to research various reform movements and reformers between 1820 and 1860, identify a social problem that existed, gather evidence, determine the causes, and evaluate the policy. You will be an investigator, historian and public policy analyst all rolled into one. Your findings will be used to inform our students at G. Ray Bodley as to the realities of woman, African Americans, students, prisoners, and the mentally ill in our nation’s history.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Task

1.   Individually choose one reform movement or reformer from American history (1820-1860) to research.

2.   Use the American History Public Policy Analyst to guide your research.

3.   Create a five minute poster presentation explaining the struggles and challenges of the selected reformer or reform movement.

Ø Define the social problem.

Ø Include evidence of research

Ø Include all four steps of AHPPA

4.   Include a conclusion in your poster that discusses the social problem and how it affects society today based on the evidence you gathered.

Process

Each group will use and complete the AHPPA that investigates the social problems that faced African Americans, women of the temperance movement, public education, and the mentally ill in American History. As Public Policy Analyst, you will use steps to complete your presentations. You will be responsible for completing the worksheets on the links below. You will use the web sites in the “resource” section along with outside material to complete the four worksheets. These four steps will form the outline for your poster and oral presentation.
