My Super Sweet Quinceañera

Introduction:

The problem is that students in NSJHS are not aware of Hispanic traditions and cultural differences.

Many of you may not have any friends who are Hispanic.  You may never have spoken to a person from a Spanish speaking country, or ever entered a Hispanic home.  The problem is that there is one tradition that now is going to impact your life.

You knew it would happen and the day has finally come.  You’ve been invited to your first Quinceañera.  You have heard your classmates talking about it.  The only thing you know is that it is a big birthday party for girls who are Hispanic.  You cannot go to the party without more information.

There is also another catch to all this, not only have you been invited, but the birthday girl has asked you to be a member of her Court.  You have no idea what that means, and you have to figure it out quick.  The good news is that other people in the class have also been asked, so you are all going to work together to learn more about what a Quinceañera is all about.

Task

Task 1       From all the information gathered from in class articles and surveys, we will create a power point stating and answering some solutions as to how to overcome the lack of cultural knowledge.

Task 2       Each group will answer the following questions on the worksheet provided to gather some background information.

The birthday girl is a good friend of yours.  So much so that she has asked you to be a part of the celebration by being a member of her court.  All you know is that if you are a girl you will be a Dama and if you are a boy, you will be a Chambelán.

You need to find out all about a traditional Quinceañera, and quick.  You have to find out the following information through this WebQuest.

Process Task 2

Now you are ready to get started.  There is only 6 months until the party.  Since you’ve heard that it is similar to a wedding that is not a lot of time.

You will break up into groups of 2 and each group will be responsible for different topics.  Once you have all of your topics you will create a class Power Point. You will all decide on a title once you are done.   Here are the topics you need to research:

PHASE 8

Once you have gathered all of your information, you will get together with the other groups and decide how the presentation will flow.  You will create slides on one person’s Internet account, but everyone will add to the information.  The Power Point should follow a logical flow and provide pertinent information about a Quinceañera to someone who does not know about this Hispanic tradition.  You will then take turns introducing your slides to the class.
