Global Warming and its Impact in New York City.

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. From
glacial periods (or "ice ages") where ice covered significant
portions of the Earth to interglacial periods where ice retreated to the poles
or melted entirely - the climate has continuously changed.
. You have just
been assigned by the Mayor to a special task force of scientists who are
investigating the causes of the recent increase in temperature in

Your job is to evaluate the current theories and policies
regarding global warming and the increase of local temperature that is being
observed in
.
1: You will be
divided into groups of five. The group will have the responsibility of
producing a product
2: Each group
will create a poster board representing the six steps of the PPA. Each section
of the poster board will have a written essay and graphics, in the form of
pictures, charts and/or graphs.
A representation
of the options for the poster board is shown below.
3: Each group
will make a five minute oral presentation explaining their findings and the
public policy they chose.
4: The public
policy must evaluate the negative aspects of the global warming,
and come up with alternatives that can help the
community
5: We will submit this to the Mayor—so make it
professional
To complete the “TASK” students will be divided into
groups of five to work cooperatively to complete the task. Each group will follow the structure stated
below. The group will be responsible for completing the SIX-STEP Public Policy Analyst
worksheets.
6. Each group’s work must reflect usage of the
SIX-STEP PUBLIC POLICY ANALYST as outlined below:

Each
group member will have a specific role to carry out within the group. These are
as follows:
Student # 1:
Recorder & Writer-This student will take notes on information gathered by
group members and write an outline for the power point slides. These notes will
also be used by each member to complete the story boards and oral report. This
student will be responsible for completing the Public Policy Analyst
Worksheets.
Student # 2:
Researcher-This student will do the research, with help of other members.
He/she will search the Internet and gather information that will be used to
complete the worksheets. The information gathered will be focused on
destruction of the South American rainforest and its affects on the future of
the planet.
Student # 3:
Time keeper of organizer-Will keep the group on track.
He/she will assist in the research, lead & coordinate group meetings and be
aware of teacher made deadlines and schedules
Student # 4:
Presenter- This student will be
responsible to convey the group findings to the class. He/she will be the main
speaker in the Oral Presentation and will assign others their subordinate roles
for the oral presentation. The Power point
should be used as part of this presentation. The
presenter will coordinate the oral report but all members will take part in
some form.
STUDENT # 5: This
student will be responsible for construction of the project story board. He/she
will get input from all group members.

completing this Web quest, you should be familiar with global warming and the
role human beings play, if any, in increasing local temperatures. You will have sharpened your critical
thinking skills as you evaluate the existing public policies and suggest the
best policies to prevent the increase in temperature. You will also evaluate the role humans play
in global warming. You also now should be aware of the role of the public
policy analyst. It is this professional who researches major social problems and
finds public policy solutions to help all.
Your
report to the Mayor can be a valuable addition to the debate about what needs
to be done in
