INTRODUCTIONThe Earth's climate has changed throughout history. From glacial periods (or "ice ages") where ice covered significant portions of the Earth to interglacial periods where ice retreated to the poles or melted entirely - the climate has continuously changed.

.  You have just been assigned by the Mayor to a special task force of scientists who are investigating the causes of the recent increase in temperature in New York City. Despite media reports that cite scientific evidence that humans play a large role in the increasing atmospheric temperature, city officials are not sure.  With the melting of icecaps and the freaky changes in weather, many people argue that humans are causing changes in the environment that are increasing the temperature.  Scientists are constantly debating where or not global warming exists.

.

.

TASK

Your job is to evaluate the current theories and policies regarding global warming and the increase of local temperature that is being observed in New York City. Will this have a major impact upon people’s lives? How should the city plan for the future? Will the climate of New York become like that of Miami today? The Mayor is anxiously awaiting your report.

PROCESS

1: You will be divided into groups of five. The group will have the responsibility of producing a product

2: Each group will create a poster board representing the six steps of the PPA. Each section of the poster board will have a written essay and graphics, in the form of pictures, charts and/or graphs.

A representation of the options for the poster board is shown below.

3: Each group will make a five minute oral presentation explaining their findings and the public policy they chose.

4: The public policy must evaluate the negative aspects of the global warming,

and come up with alternatives that can help the community

5: We will submit this to the Mayor—so make it professional

To complete the “TASK” students will be divided into groups of five to work cooperatively to complete the task.   Each group will follow the structure stated below. The group will be responsible for completing the    SIX-STEP Public Policy Analyst worksheets.

After completing this Web quest, you should be familiar with global warming and the role human beings play, if any, in increasing local temperatures.  You will have sharpened your critical thinking skills as you evaluate the existing public policies and suggest the best policies to prevent the increase in temperature.  You will also evaluate the role humans play in global warming. You also now should be aware of the role of the public policy analyst. It is this professional who researches major social problems and finds public policy solutions to help all.

Your report to the Mayor can be a valuable addition to the debate about what needs to be done in New York City to meet the changes that will be faced by all people living the city.  Let’s hope you and your group made a difference!
