A PROJECT CRITICAL WEB QUEST

“Gang Violence and Youth:

New York City

Presented by: Niurka Castro

PS 115

New York City, NY

Introduction

During the past few years, there has been a dramatic increase in gang-related violence in New York.  In order to target gang violence, it is crucial to obtain the techniques necessary to identify gangs and their activity. Determining the causes of gang participation and the key factors that increase the likelihood of gang membership will provide insight into the gang mentality. This knowledge of gangs and how to identify them is the first step to combating the gang problem within any community.  Simultaneously, programs that discourage gang participation, because they offer youth alternative, need to be expanded.

As gang violence increases nationwide, particularly within our inner cities, it is clear that this problem of gang participation must be addressed.  You have been hired by the Mayor Bloomberg of New York City to act as a member of a Youth Task Force, to investigate the causes of the increase in gang participation, and to create a list of resources that are available to the youth of the city.  These resources will offer young people positive alternatives so they will not choose to join a gang.   The youth who choose gangs over school are doomed to a life of crime and misery.  Often it is a short life or one that destroys valuable potential and is spent behind bars.

In this web quest you have an opportunity to change this environment of crime and destruction. Good Luck. You have an important task.
