Low Graduation rates among African American
and Latino students-A Major Social problem

African American and Latino students are dropping out
at an enormous rate in
GOOD LUCK !
In an attempt to understand the condition and
struggles students are facing students will interview peers and family
members. First, students will create a five question survey asking
questions which will help them determine why African American and Latino
students are dropping out of school.
Secondly, in groups, you will refer to the six steps Public Policy
Analysis and follow the procedure below to write a three page research paper. Finally, Students will then give an oral presentation in a group format of
about five minutes explaining the information they have found through the
surveys, Interviews, and research.
To summarize: Each group will
be responsible for
1)
A five question
survey that will be used in one or more of the six steps of the Public Policy
Analyst
2)
A THREE PAGE
RESEARCH PAPER-typed using MS Word and including all the steps of the PPA
3)
An ORAL REPORT of
a minimum of 5 minutes. This oral report will also follow the six step PPA
format for solving social Problems
The class will be divided
into groups of four. Each group member
will have a specific role within the group:
Survey Question Creator and
Administrator-you will be
responsible for working with your group to create a survey which helps answer
the question of why students do not attend school regularly. Once you have created the survey you will hand
it out to people in your group. Each
person will be responsible for a minimum of three surveys.
Public Policy Analyst-you
will fill in the worksheets for the group.
You will work closely with all members in the group to help them
complete their tasks. You will need to work closely with the researchers who
will provide the information for the six PPA worksheets.

Researcher-you

information on ways to improve attendance and incentives be offered to students
in New York City. You will then coordinate your efforts with the Public Policy
Analyst.
Paper Writer- you
will gather all the required information and write a three page paper to
present to the class. You will use the information from the six PPA worksheets
to write your paper. You should use the PPA as an outline to complete the task
