The New Imperialism:  Economic Motivation

INTRODUCTION:

 During the late 19th Century, many western European nations formed colonies mainly in India, Africa and China.  Most of the motivation was for the spread of Christianity, but very importantly to find materials that could be taken to market.  This period was called the New Imperialism.  Between 1876 and 1915, about 1/4 of the world’s surface was distributed as colonies.  Britain increased its territories by 4 million square miles, France by 3.5 million, Germany by over 1 million, with direct control most common in India, Africa, and also in large portions of Asia.


TASK: 

The year is 1890.  You are on a fact finding mission for your newspaper.  You are to embed yourself with the “developers” of the day and in the region you are assigned.  Part of your assignment is to write a journalist review of all that you see and do.  You will turn your review into your editor at the end of your expedition.

The final paper will include both positive and negative effects.  Be sure to connect facts with the conclusion and give sufficient evidence for your point view expresses in the article.  Be sure that you are objective when you write your article.

Managing Editor- You will be responsible for taking the teams through all of the steps of the PPA.  You will edit and compile the newspaper articles and editorials from each Bureau Chief.  You will work with the typesetter/graphic artist. on the final article to be turned into the editor for print in the newspaper.  The final article will be creatively designed and written and well thought out.

Africa Bureau Chief-will thoroughly investigate (using the resources provided in the Resource section below) imperialism in Africa. You must included at least 1 Article and 1 Editorial (Typed and well thought out)

India Bureau Chief-will thoroughly investigate (using the resources provided in the Resource section below) imperialism in India. You must included at least 1 Article and 1 Editorial (Typed and well thought out)

China Bureau Chief-will thoroughly investigate (using the resources provided in the Resource section below) imperialism in China. You must included at least 1 Article and 1 Editorial (Typed and well thought out)

Typesetter/Graphic Artist- You will work with the bureau chief on the final article(s) to be turned into the editor for print in the newspaper.  The final article will be creatively designed and written and well thought out.
